OT: Bands & Singers That Play for at Least 2 1/2 Hours
Posted by: BluzDude ()

I was thinking of a thread that had to do with bands that give you their monies worth, but there would have been too many ways to look at it.

So, no judgement if you like the band or not, just looking for facts.

I would like to know which recording artists "Normally" play for at least 2 1/2 hours. Here is my list that I know of, so far.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (Magic tour started under 2 1/2 but expanded as the tour went on.)
Paul McCartney
Foo Fighters
Green Day

From the past:
Led Zeppelin (early 1970 & 1972 thru 1977)

BTW, I saw the Foo Fighters last week; David Grohl sat in and played drums for the warm-up act Cage the Elephant (drummer got sick the night before) and then returned to do almost a 2 hr. 45 minute show with the FF.

Also saw Elton John in Vegas, played for 2 hours, but I understand his touring shows are about 2 1/2 hours long (this was the first time I've seen him in about 20 years).

The last David Bowie show I saw was 2:45.

Just saw Roger Daltrey. His show was 2-1/2 hours.

Pearl Jam
My Morning Jacket
The Allman Brothers Band
Gov't Mule
Elvis Costello and the Imposters (though not on the most recent tours)

Have to disagree with Pearl Jam. While they can easily throw out a 3 hour show, (they are very unpredictable, which I like) their average length show on their last tour was well under 2 1/2 hours.

The five or so shows I saw from '06 to '10 were all right around 2 1/2 hours.

furthur
wilco

widespread

EDIT: Last pj show I saw was 2.4 hours, so I guess I need to take them off the list, last Wilco was 2.8 hours so they count. I am sure about the others.

You must have hit all the special shows.

Example, the 4 shows in L.A. the last tour were all about 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes. comparing the set lists (which change each night), the amount of music they played was the same for a majority of their performances. I know there are certain cities and certain occasions where they will extend their set.

First time I saw Elton, he played for 3 hours. The first 45 minutes and the last 45 minutes were very good. I dozed off during the 90 minutes in the middle.

Allman Brothers for sure. Saw them March 13, 1976, the 5-year anniversary of the Live At The Fillmore East show. They played until 2:30 in the morning.

No mention of the Grateful Dead? Didn't they sometimes play for as long as 5 hours?

F&%¤ing hell! That's why I like the '78 tour so much, just 90 mins pure R n R and then off. I've seen the E-Street Band a couple of times (ONE show EVERY tour) & it's just too much. A good show should just be 90-110 mins, the less the better and then the audience will keep coming back.

Neil Young played close to three hours when I saw him in 2008.

Nonsense. If the band and the music are good enough to sustain a long show, then they should play as long as they want.

How long did Zeppelin play during their heyday?

Seems like they would need all day to get a decent number of tunes in one show!

In their heyday, Zep usually played for about three hours, but the 1975 shows ran longer than that. I have one show from LA in 1975 where they play for three and a half hours; half of that is taken up by No Quarter (30 minutes), Moby Dick (30), and Dazed and Confused (45).

I was at all three of the Forum shows in 1975. The third night which was the final night of that leg of the tour was indeed over 3 1/2 hours long. I remember all the people getting up and going to the bathroom, or going to get a beer during Dazed and Confused.

A 90 Minute show is fine at 1978 prices. At $450 I expect a long-ass show.

Speaking of which, seeing Some Girls Live in Texas 1978 in a movie theatre this week cost the same as seeing the Stones at JFK Stadium in 1978, $12.50.

45 minutes of Dazed and Confused??? I'd have been Stunned and Disoriented.

At $450 I expect dinner, a hotel room, and a fully paid escort with tip.

Actually I think the 45 minute bootleg version was edited down (lol).

Cliff Richard & The Shadows played for around 150 minutes on their 2009 reunion / farewell tour (despite all pushing 70).

They were prolly so glad that anyone was actually paying to be there, and clapping....they didnt' want it to end.

The tickets sold out very quickly. I tried to buy one about a week later... I was too late.
