Memphis Tennessee

Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
Help me find the party trying to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number, but I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall

Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd phone me here from Memphis Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi Bridge

Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
But we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee

"Last time I saw Marie she's waving me good-bye
With hurry home drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
Marie is only six years old, information please
Try to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee"

Note: Info taken from NZentgraf and WW-Internet and Deltics ;o)

Love this version. Again, it's a hard song to get wrong. One thing I'll say though is that nothing - not even Chuck Berry's original cut - beats the Faces version on A Nod's As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse.

The officially-released (instrumental) version is utterly forgettable pseudo-Stones filler.

Nicos, thank you for graciously taking the helm and expertly guiding Track Talk to this point. It’s been a glorious voyage and it ain’t over yet … 2 blues covers + 10 more soon-to-be-released!

I think you have included both versions in one in your liner notes, NICO smiling smiley

I'm also pretty sure that Mick was the only Stone on the version with vocals.

Might be because it was never released by The Stones, but rather by The Andrew Oldham Orchestra?

The version with vocals was indeed released as the Stones.

I don't have the German disc, but this YouTube video suggests that the version on "The Rest of the Best" was instrumental. So that is not correct then?

The instrumental "Memphis" released by The Andrew Oldham Orchestra which appears on numerous Stones bootlegs and was legitimately released on Decca's REST OF THE BEST box set in 1983. This version followed Lonnie Mack's 1963 instrumental arrangment.

"Memphis, Tennessee" with a vocal is a BBC radio performance and (along with "Roll Over, Beethoven" ) arguably represents the best recording of the band from 1963. While broadcast many times (available from Westwood One on a collectible series of Stones rarities, remixes, solo tracks, and session works), it has never been legitimately offered for sale by ABKCO/Decca despite its appearance on countless bootlegs.

There seems to be some confusion here.
The version of "Memphis" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra as incorrectly included on "The Rest Of The Best" is an instrumental version.

Well that's very odd, my version is identical to the one on 16 Hip Hits.

Maybe ABKCO realized they'd included the "wrong" version (i.e. the instrumental) and corrected the mistake?

Unlikely as the vocal version is a BBC recording and not owned by ABKCO.

It doesn't really sound like a BBC-recording. I'll rip it for you.

You wouldn't by any chance have the CB Blues-version of The Rest Of The Best, would you?

Might be that they did more changes to this box set than we were aware of confused smiley

This is quite interesting as I have 4 different copies of "The Rest of the Best" but they all have the instrumental version on it. Could you maybe provide the Matrix-number of the disc with the vocal-version?

I don't have the single.
What is printed on your cover? This one says that the track is from "16 Hip Hits".

This is gettig interesting. My sister purchased the LP box set in 1984 from a retail store that carried it as an import. It has the 45 of "C*cksucker Blues" included. The version of "Memphis" is the cover of Lonnie Mack's instrumental arrangement. The LP box says MADE IN GERMANY but the track listings and notations are in English.
