For those of you who may have missed the record breaking moment .
Nice, thanks for posting.
I agree that this is one record we wont seen broken in our lifetime... just like Cal Ripken Jr's 2131 consecutive starts. One has to be a loooooong term quality player to hit these marks, and drugs and steroids wont help them reach longevity marks and with the money paid out these days, guys are BaZiilionaires, fat and happy long before they reach these lofty numbers....
....with that said, yes, I think money speeds up the already fast fuse on professional athletes career. imuho, I think all athletes should be paid 100% commision based on their first 3 years in the league. For the first 3 years all rookies should get an esculating salary based on their play, and then after 3 years with thier standards set, they MUST reach those performance numbers in order to make the money they hope to be paid, and if they exceed the numbers they will make more, but they must perform on the field or they will feel it in their bank account. How many times have we seen a player have a great season, sign a BIG FAT contract, and the next year, they are Kaput, until the next precontract season.
My point is...
Mariano Rivera kept on producing loooooonnngg after he was a rich KaBillioniaire, like the great player he is, for the love of the game... and unlike some here who are too petty, snide or imature to set aside their trollish feelings.... today I am able to reconize the man for what he did....tomorrow I will be back to despising him and despising the damn Yankees, but for the moment I will give this great player all the credit he deserves.

Great. But why is everyone disagrees with you or says something negative a "troll"?

F u c k the Yankees. F u c k the whole American League for that matter. Just sayin'.
How about Floyd Mayweather?
Maybe I should clarify for reasons of efficency. F u c k the whole American League subsequent to 1973. If you can't hit the ball, or worse, don't even try, don't play. In my humble opinion, Mr. Rivera only played half the game. Shame really, I've always believed all those American League pitchers got cheated by the most frivolous rule in professional sports. Don't know what Floyd Mayweather Jr. has to do with the Yankees, but if he's a Pinstripes fan . . . then yes, f u c k him too! ha ha!
Nonsense. The double switch is not the be all and end all of baseball. NL pitchers get one gift non-hitter nearly every time through the lineup.
By pitching in the AL for his entire career, Rivera hardly ever faces an opposing pitcher. So he has made a career out of getting outs in big spots by pitching nearly all the time to actual big league hitters. And he has been a class act all the way. I'd make a little shrine in the mancave to him, if I had the room.

The DH is an artificial position, and the AL plays an artificial version of the game. Less complexity, less elegance. Another pleasure of the game is the pitcher who can hit (Bob Gibson, Orel Hirscheiser, etc). This is a true athlete. The AL simply takes the approach that since most pitchers are poor hitters, it is better to just wipe them from the batting order. It creates a new position of a hitter who does not play the field, which is completely antithetical to the very principles of the game.

You ARE the Man 71Tele! Couldn't have said it better. Well done. Bravo! As for all these Yankee lovin' whores—some of whom have the audacity to say they despise the Yankees then proceed to suck Mr. Rivera's salty balls . . . well, f u c k them too! Not looking to start trouble in the least, but a fact is a fact—the Yankees stand for everything abhorrent and disgusting in professional sports.
Not looking to start trouble? You have a juvenile user name. You've probably been banned 5 times already and you have 15 posts since coming back. All of them hostile and negative.Quote

I am a Red Sox fan (agony at the moment) but Mariano Rivera is the best releif pitcher in baseball history hands down. Anyone who slags him does not know crap about baseball. The guy is a class act and a great ptcher! Hats off to him.

Why do you keep flooding the thread with your negative posts?
It is a celebration, not a bitch fest.

Why do you worry so much about how often I post or what I say to other people? That's the question you should be asking yourself. I read stuff by you I disagree with every day and I don't feel the need to call you out on the FACT that you are posting - or the frequencey (which is much higher than my posts, by the way). You have a strange obsession with me. It's starting to feel a little creepy, like you stalk my posts or something. perhaps you should occupy your time with something more productive. Just an idea, Cheers.

I got no problem with the DH. It's better than seeing a pitcher up there swing and miss 3 times. Strategy my ass. The only strategy I'm interested in is seeing my team win.

Debating baseball (which records are more difficult to achieve than others, the merits of the DH rule, etc.) is FUN, just like debating the relative merits of members of the Rolling Stones. It harms no one, yet in each case you seem to take it personally.

I dont look for you, it is hard to find a thread you havent gone all negative on.
ps

debbie downer 6300 posts in a year... and is telling other people "occupy your time with something more productive"
as far as the rest of your nonsense, well, it makes no sense, but you seem to be having fun babbling it.
ps
and debbie, as far as this thread, you have made your point, there no need to negativley reply to every single post, as if they are talking to you. It a thread celebrating Mariano. period... there was never a need to bring your debbie downer here.

I come from Panama, a country with a 3 million population.
The land of Roberto Duran and Mariano Rivera, and we take great pride
on the achivements of this athletes or whoever comes out of our small
country and leaves a mark out there.
This guys pretty much make it out of poverty on their own as it's very
hard to get any support here.
In both cases, Duran and Rivera, both are extremely amazing persons with
great hearts and contribute very much to social cuases, etc.
So anyway, I'm very proud on Mariano's record and as most of the baseball fans
in Panama, I'm a Yankees fan. Became one because it was Mariano's team.
I like to see them win as I used to like watching Duran win, but I dont take
any joy on watching any rivals loose. I don't hate other teams, I dont hate other
boxers.
It's not complicated.

Panama is a great baseball country. And you have every right to be proud of your countryman's achievements. Making it in pro baseball at any level is tough. Making it at the highest level - and excelling there - is truly noteworthy. Even a Yankee-hater like myself can appreciate that.

Hey Max and Tele, just calm down. You're both very entertaining to read and add meaningful comments to this forum.
Back to the topic, I was listening to an interview the other day and realized how great of a human being Mariano is. Without a doubt, one of the greatest baseball players of all time in and out the ballpark.
Regarding Duran and Mayweather, interestingly, boxing and the Stones are the only two things that interested me when I was 8 and still do.
Hey Tele, glad you're a boxing fan too.Quote

Manuel: I'm calm. I have nothing against Max. I wished him well (though I was hurt that he didn't congratulate me on my 6,000th post).
Great that you're interested in boxing. I took up boxing at the ripe old age of 49 and I'm still at it. I'm not great, but I haven't quit! Who's your favorite boxer?
