How funny...I just watched Thunderbolt and Lightfoot last night. Such a great movie. And The Deer Hunter...it still blows me away all these years later. Such a powerful flick; such a story of men, women, life, things we don't quite comprehend or understand.

Heaven's Gate is also an underrated gem of a film.

He also co-wrote the script of "Magnum Force" thumbs up

Alas after "Heaven's Gate" it went donwhill for him. "Year Of The Dragon" has some good bits but after this film... confused smiley

Sad news, the deer hunter is my number one film.

It looks like heaven's gate could turn out to be a classic.

Yeah too bad he didn't live to see his film fully restored to his original vision...

A brilliant director. RIP Mr. Cimino!

I recently watched the director's cut of Heavens Gate and it is outstanding! Very underrated epic.

The Deer Hunter - R.I.P. Michael Cimino

I went looking for Heaven's Gate to watch it in Mr Cimino's honor. I never saw Heaven's Gate back in the day (but I heard all of the noise) then three nights ago I watched (for the first time) an interesting 90 minute movie about the events, people, times, studios and other things surrounding the making Heaven's Gate and I thought it was time I should finally watch Heaven's Gate. Over time I have read knowledgeable film fan seem to unanimously say that, although it is not fast paced and can meander, it is a great film and all the money spent making it can be seen on the screen, I was going to post here about that interesting biop/movpic, but I figured no one here cared.

Now try to find Steven Bach's "Final Cut" book. He witnessed the (un)making of the film from within.

That is the 90 minute biop/movpic (whatever they call those things) I was talking about.
It is on youtube for free (it is still up at the moment). I watched it the other night.

LLoking again, it is actually only 75 minutes long.

And I couldn't find an easy to watch Heaven's Gate.
For a movie the studio and so many claims to hate, it is not out here for free easy.

So it is on my list... I think it comes on TV somewhat often.

In 2012, Criterion released a 216 Minute Cut of the film. This was overseen by Cimino himself and it is this cut that earned the retrospective acclaim.

Previous versions of the film omitted key parts. This contributed to its critical and commercial failures. Additionally, in order to meet deadlines, the Cuts for the Premiere and Theatrical releases were rushed.

Check you local library for the 2012 Cut. I have a digital copy ripped from my DVD. Let me know if you still cannot find it and I will try and put it on Google Drive or something similar. If you are into film, it's worth the 4-hour investment.

Now I'd like to know if the 2012 216-minute "director's cut" matches the version of equal length I saw in a small arthouse movie theater around 1990...

If hopefully Cimino will become as legendary as Peckinpah we might one see uncut "true to the director's vision" recuts of "Desperate Hours" and "The Sicilian". thumbs up

Loved Cimino. Deerhunter was, obviously, incredible even if it meanders aimlessly here and there. However he definitely went over the line in many ways with Heaven's Gate and sunk United Artists in the process. Oh well.....

Can't see the meanders myself, but everyone to their own.
