Stones photoshoot w/David Bailey at Avebury (1968) - anyone know backstory?
Posted by: swiss ()

hey there!
Just wondering -- does anyone know any details or backstory of the David Bailey 1968 photoshoot that includes the image below, from Avebury? I posted this colorized photo on my Facebook page, and comments included:
- "Had they had a row just before the photo was taken? Look at the body language!"
and
- "All look a bit stroppy poppy to me..."
(The commenter confirmed "stroppy poppy" is similar to "grumpy monkey" )

It's tempting (and fun) to theorize about what might have been going on, but even better to hear any stories, facts, or background of that day. Anyone know anything? Googled around a bit, and came up empty-handed. Nothing serious, just idle summertime curiosity -- thanks!

These seem to be from the same day, some obviously used on 1973's No Stone Unturned.

Those first few are from the "Child of the Moon" video shoot.

The "Jumpin' Jack Flash" pics are from a different shoot.
Different clothes, different location.

My mistake. Going from memory is never a good idea.

Wonderful, Deltics -- many thanks. Don't recall having seen such a pristine Child of the Moon. If this is this your vimeo upload, would you mind my sharing it on Facebook?

And I'll look forward to searching the IORR Archives for threads about "Child of the Moon" - backstory to that video shoot. I've read about it before but not remembering much, and do remember several threads on the topic over the years, which I skimmed. Maybe there will be additional context to the verdant gloomy David Bailey Avebury photo!

thanks again

It's not mine, it appeared earlier this year along with a similarly remastered JJF on a seemingly random Vimeo account.

I agree with Dandy, they just look like they've had enough. The interesting thing to me about the top photo is how Brian is a little separate from the group. Kinda telling in a sad way.

Thanks for posting, swiss.

This is probably just the dry run for the photo, in which the photographer is checking the light and the composition.
Jagger looks like he is concentrating more than he looks upset.
Everybody else looks pretty much fine to me.
I think they have always taken photo shoots very seriously and they are very good at posing and getting into character.

Thanks again, Deltics - that video's really swell! and does appear to be a pretty random account. I unwittingly left the Vimeo player on and like 8 minutes later while doing something much different I hear these chattering voices---the woman who owns the account, two other people and a dog are trapped in an elevator at some event, and are on the phone trying to get extricated from the situation. Sounds more interesting that it is, actually. Anyway, it was good for a late-night laugh.

Maybe I'll gather up all the threads on the topic and post one big mega summary here or in one of the existing threads.

Thanks, latebloomer, I couldn't agree more. My comment on Facebook about Brian here (just what you say) was something like "poor Brian, at this point he was bloody but still for the most part unbowed." Glad you like the image too.

Jesse1960, Think you might've just nailed it. It's too focking early even for most of them to be smoking. It's. That. Got. Damned. Early.

I hoped you'd like it, with sssoul! I was wondering as I was digging around whether you, specifically, might known some obscure but fascinating tale or detail about it smiling smiley

Dry run for the video you mean?
All sorts of stories could be written about their expressions, methinks, but I'm leaning toward too-early after like 3 hours of sleep theory smiling smiley
