I generally prefer male voices, but here's one of my very favourite females:

I think Carlene Carter is very underrated, as a songwriter & singer. She's a hellcat with a heart o' gold.

I also LOVE Neko Case, she's a huge talent.

Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee and Carlene Carter.

Carlene is famous for her quote of 'I put the cxxt in country'.

A friend of mine, Chris Wilson of the Flamin' Groovies tells a great story that she went backstage to see the group in San Francisco in the late 70s and said right out loud in her best country accent, "Ah feel lahk sittin' on someone's face". Bless her.

I'm not sure what box to put her in, but I'll vote for Lucinda also...

Lucinda, Amy, Emmylou, Gillian Welch, Carlene.

Carlene's great fun. I had a very enjoyable night out on the town with her last year which ended with all of us toasting her step-dad on what would have been his birthday.

Lucinda's a very nice person too.

Have never met Emmylou or Gillian and sadly never will get to meet Amy.

Sheryl Crow

Wasn't sure if she is considered "country" but since she performed at Farm Aid, that probably suffices - at least on that day.

Like Mick said on Stripped at the conclusion of Dead Flowers- "I felt like a hillbilly for a minute there - just a minute though."

Love Carlene, Lucinda, Emmylou and Neko. Neko's an old friend, known her for twenty years though haven't seen her for a few. I remember she was still living in Vancouver when she and my then-roommate Jennifer decided to put a country band together, the rest is history. We didn't know she could sing then and she was very shy about it at first. Her first recorded vocals were singing backups on our old band's album back in '95.

Always happy to see Flamin' Groovies props -- it would seem the connection to Carlene Carter was via their producer Dave Edmunds to Nick Lowe who was married to her -- see wedding clips in his "Cruel to Be Kind" video,,,, Without knowing a lot about it, I know she spent some dark years -- she was married to Howie Epstein of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers who was whacked by drugs. Anyway, last I heard she was doing well, which I hope is still the case.

I read on the Yahoo Groovies board that Chris and Cyril made up after many years and there was talk of working. I like the Loney era and saw Roy and Cyril 2 years ago but definitely count me as a Sire era guy.

Oh, my vote -- EmmyLou! Amazing talent to say the least but also got purtier and purtier as she got older!
