Political Statements

I know the previous thread on this topic was closed. In the last comment a statement was made to the effect that the poster was surprised that so many conservatives like the stones given their counter culture and liberal past.
There is some truth to those statements, but for the last 25 years I would consider the stones as the consummate, conservative capitalists and with the exception of their occasional sudo intellectual song, a very politically conservative group as a whole

You are right here, the Stones always seemed to have an aristocratic lifestyle, to me there is nothing wrong with that, I would never consider men who have castles and houses all over the world as revolutionaries. It is better to enjoy life than talking about revolution all the time and telling others how to live.

When I first heard 'Salt Of The Earth', I thought the lyrics were ironic. The idea of the Stones caring about the proletariat seemed absolutely implausible.

I don't care about them either.

For goodness sake, The Stones left England to avoid paying high taxes! That is being conservative.

Of course the Stones talk a "liberal" game.

This unabashed conservative loves the Allman Bros, Grateful Dead, Los Lobos, the Clash and more. My only problem is when the musician starts mixing their politics with their art and ramming it down their paying audiences throat ala Springsteen or Missy Etheridge or Michelle Shocked. At that point I stop patronizing the artist, which is no loss anyway, as invariably the artist's creative muse has left them. "Queen of The Supermarket" anyone?

If the Stones had highlighted the dreadful (by any standard) "Sweet Neo-Con" in their shows instead of using it as politically correct filler on ABB I might feel differently about them too. Instead they surrendered their creative muse to the almighty dollar eons ago.

Mick Jagger once said "my heart is with Labour but my money is with the Conservatives" ...........

For me, any political statement in rock music is subordinate to the music. If the music is
fine, I don't care whatever statement the songwriter is trying to make, because I am too busy
to enjoy the music at the moment.
But sometimes songwriters manage to "hit me" with their message and in those occasions I can
start to like a song that does not rock me musically, just because I like the lyrics.
Randy Newman is one of those songwriters who does that occasionally. Mainly because he manages
to mix his political statements with absolutely great humor (in my opinion, that is).

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

So you just started a new thread, and that will soon be closed. What's the point?

Apparently one of Mick's favourite writers..............

The Rolling Stones never were a political band but had some strokes of anti- establishment in their early years. In fact rock and pop were seen as rebellious and anti-establishment in the sixties (even more so in the fifties). Remember the Beatles haircuts and what a threat it was to society! That is not valid today though and hasn't been since the seventies. The 50-60 society was more of a conformist society. It didn't take much to be rebellious.

"But what can a poor boy do, except to sing in a rock and roll band, because in a sleepy London town . . that is where the money is."

It's only about the music for me. Some of my musical heroes are racists & perverts, but that doesn't change the way I feel about their music.

I agree. Does anybody really think of Pete Townsend being bi when you're listenning to a Who song? It shouldn';t make a difference.

Indeed, but whatever Pete may be he isn't advocating for it in his music or from his bully pulpit.

It's not so much a conservative concept as it is just plain common sense.

Are you saying that being conservative is "just plain common sense"? You do have a point there.

Here's one of my faves.

Political World by Bob Dylan

We live in a political world
Love don't have any place
We're living in times
Where men commit crimes
And crime don't have any face.

We live in a political world
Icicles hanging down
Wedding bells ring
And angels sing
Clouds cover up the ground.

We live in a political world
Wisdom is thrown in jail
It rots in a cell
Is misguided as hell
Leaving no one to pick up a trail.

We live in a political world
Where mercy walks the plank
Life is in mirrors
Death disappears
Up the steps into the nearest bank.

We live in a political world
Where courage is a thing of the past
Houses are haunted
Children unwanted
The next day could be your last.

We live in a political world
The one we can see and feel
But there's no one to check
It's all a stacked deck
We all know for sure that it's real.

We live in a political world
In the cities of lonesome fear
Little by little
You turn in the middle
But you're never sure why you're here.
We live in a political world
Under the microscope
You can travel anywhere
And hang yourself there
You always got more than enough rope.

We live in a political world
Turning and trashing about
As soon as you're awake
You're trained to take
What looks like the easy way out.

We live in a political world
Where peace is not welcome at all
It's turned away from the door
To wonder some more
Or put up against the wall.

We live in a political world
Everything is hers and his
Climb into the frame
And shout God's name
But you're never sure what it is.

I like that!

Instead of taking a music thread and turning it political, you've done just the opposite...

Both sides of the political spectrum use that argument to justify their political weltanschauung...
