Some Girls reissue

So you've been placed in charge of putting together a disc of Some Girls outtakes for the reissue. You are allowed 10 songs. What do you put on it?

Me? I'd put Claudine for sure. Really like No Spare Parts. Do You Think I Still Care is nice. Fiji Jim. Everlasting Is My Love.

What else might you select?

I Need You

First of all; "I Need You"

After that - Do You Think I Really Care, So Young and Claudine

The thing about Some Girls outtakes.....even though they're great listens - the versions we know from bootlegs are not even half finished. For instance "A Different Kind".....cou've been great, as the chords and melody is terrific. But it's running dry pretty soon - pretty much because of the vocals. And I doubt that songs like these ever were finished, lyric-wise; or overdub-wise; based on interviews and the bootlegs. I bet a "Some Girls reissue" would be just as overdubbed as the "Exile reissue" if Jagger and the band ever would be satisfied enough with it to let it be officially released.

The best listens of the SG outtakes is actually "alternate" or "more complete" versions of the songs that made it to the album "Some Girls"

"More Fast Numbers" - the double CD from DAC - is a great starter to hear some of this stuff in best possible quality.

Wrote my post before I saw yours. Yes indeed, that's one of the greatest Rolling Stones outtakes in my opinion. Doesn't even need to be "finished" - the uncompletenesness (sp?) of the song really suits it - terrific mood, chords and singing, I think

I CanĀ“t Help It. Great song. Love the acoustic guitars in it.

I agree nothing seems finished and unlikely they ever were. Claudine sounds finished (the revved-up version).

"Lonely at the top"...but Sir. Michael Philip Jagger ruined this great outtake with the awful solo version!

"So Young" probably wouldn't be in the running since it was finished during the VOODOO LOUNGE sessions and ended up as a B-side that has just been reissued by Universal Music.

We know there has been some progress on this project, but I'm starting to suspect a 2012 release is more likely unless details leak out soon.

The alternate and promo mixes are nearly enough to create a great "lost" album if combined with the better, more finished outtakes.

"Claudine" STILL can't be released.

It was indeed finished. It was only dropped for legal reasons (I remember in 1980 reading in the Melody Maker that it was pulled at the last minute from 'Emotional Rescue')

'Lonely at the Top' wasnt recorded for 'Some Girls'. Its an ER outtake, recorded in early 1979.

I believe youre quite correct, Erik. They recorded over 40 songs. Realistically, what would be the point of finishing many more than they needed.

If anything, they were probably stockpiling tracks in case Keith had to go to jail. Had that happened, then Jagger could have THEN finished the lyrics and vocals for release. The music was pretty much done, based on the evidence of the bootlegs.

- Do you know where one may find that either zip or mp3 (not rar)? Would love to hear these prized outtakes!

Fiji Jim gets my vote. Love the frenetic pace and phrasing. The lyrics - though incomplete - are some of the best since Exile I think.

It coulda been a contender! smiling smiley

Are you sure about that?

"Carbona Not Glue" was pulled from the Ramones' LEAVE HOME, but has reappeared in reissues.

How about the original SG cover, can they reissue that?

I wonder what Mick thought of this:

any song thats close to complete, as long as they just leave them in the rough condition and dont try to doctor them up it will be great.one of the sad things about the exile outtakes is they made it painfully obvious how much the stones have lost in terms of actually recording a quality record.
and i liked the songs, but "exile outtakes" please.mick sounded as though he was reciting lyrics [again] instead of singing[could he just friggin stop that already,c,mon jagger get the vocal coach out of your ear and sing from your gut] and the mick/keith dubbed vocals and grinding rhythm that is[sorry, was] the stones sound is nowhere to be found.

at this point the band "touching up" their heyday comes off about as well as ali and frazier trying to recreate the thrilla in manila.

so,as i said. whatever they can release "as is"

This long WHEN THE WHIP COMES DOWN jam. Starting around the 7:20 mark is especially a great rhythm-section-bit.

Is it due for release this fall?

Love it if they were able to find a song that could be used as a single for this, a la Plunder My Soul.
