You would think if a guy loves the blues so much, he might slip the odd blues number into at least one record over the last three decades. What was the last, Mannish boy on love you live.

This is the only time I saw him play like this: #1.
He should have made a complete album, cause I like this style:
#2 #3 #4 #5 #6 # 7 #8,etc.

Keith is a musician, not a "bluesman". He loves the blues but he ain't a bluesman.

Absolutely right. And Keith has never claimed that he was a bluesman.
Therefore the title of this thread, the initial question "Why does Keith Richards pretend to be a bluesman" is total Bullshite.
Simply because Keith Richards does not pretend to be a bluesman.

And basic Robert Johnson style ain't the blues? LOL! Lots of the IORR-ians play guitar, and many are very good at it.

When did the blues become very complicated, btw? It has always been about the feel.

You should go and get Voodoo Srew now! On one of the four discs, Keith plays his old favourites on acoustic. Lots of good stuff; blues, country etc.

Here's one of the tracks:

Re: Why does Keith Richards pretend to be a bluesman

I've NEVER heard Keith Richards claim or pretend to be a Bluesman, I've heard him express his admiration for a lot of old timers from the US esp. who play the blues, I've heard him say he enjoys listening to the said old timers and playing that style but I've never heard him claim to be one of their peers. In fact, pertinent to your other point claiming a lack of blues recordings done by Keith & the Rolling Stones he recently said this "I've always aspired to writing some really good blues, never been able to get it down, Back of my hand was the nearest we came to it - it's not bad.".................
So, according to you anyone who likes the blues "pretends to be a bluesman", well that would include me then and I can't even play the guitar which is obviously renders the premise of your question stupid .................so unless you can produce a cut and paste of the text and name the publication where you read Keith make this claim or post the video perhaps of the same I would say you've got off on the wrong foot..................your question in fact puts words in Keith Richards' mouth which I'd bet he never said...that's not polite..........P.S. The dictionary definition of pretend is "to make a claim falsely (On a position or role)"....right, enough clowning...I'm off to talk to my cat...more sense...more reward

This is one of the most authentic blues pieces Keith has arranged. In fact one of the most authentic blues songs ANYONE has arranged, imo.

If you can't here the blues here, you can't hear it anywhere...

Yeah, I know this one, it's almost fingerpickin' country style.

Yeah, but there are other acoustic Johnson-esque blues numbers on the album.

Easily one of the best buys I've made - ever. This disc was beyond a treat - Keith working on the acoustic descending line for New Faces and he's just screwing around while someone has the DAT rolling.

Beyond priceless. This is a must have. Please Please Me is excellent - especially the (I think this is right) "Beatles bridge - NOT going to do it" and then he does it!

Clowns, lapaz62? We're all waiting patiently for the youtube upload of you doing this basic ragtime number perfectly, followed by your "beyond-basic" example of your playing prowess. If that video doesn't surface today, we'll just assume you're a wannabe musician talking shit. There's probably several dozen players that frequent this site every day that could whip your butt before you even got to the second verse. Have some respect.

Muddy Waters, Elmore James, The Hook....The list goes on and on. No monster
chops or faultless technique, but Masters none the less.

Keith loves the blues and was inspired partially by the genre, but like those
legends above a complete (R&R) original - warts and all.
