Not sure whether to count Bruce in the 'band' or 'solo' category, so I'll put him in both with a disclaimer
Bands
(1. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band) 2. The Beatles 3. The Clash 4. The Who 5. Social Distortion (if the E Street Band dont count, then at a push I'd go for The Velvet Underground. The Stones obviously would be my favourite band though)
Solo (tie) 1. Dylan (tie) 1. Springsteen (who's first depends on my mood. I think Dylan stands alone ahead of ANY act in the history of music in terms of greatness, but Bruce's work is more consistent and he's easily my favourite live act) 3. Elvis 4. Neil Young 5. Johnny Cash
I tend to gravitate more towards solo acts than bands..if I was listing my top 30 acts, barely 20% of them would be bands.
5 is indeed difficult as it's constantly changing, but here goes:
AC/DC Bon Jovi REM Bruce Springsteen The Eagles?
I tried to base it on number of times I listen to them plus % of lyrics known....The 5th spot was the hardest, and the Eagles have 1 more CD in my 400 disc changer than Fleetwood Mac, so that is how they won out....an honorable mention could be made for Paul Simon/Simon & Garfunkel as well.
