What is Keith's fastest guitar moment?
Posted by: Title5Take1 ()

What comes to my mind as Keith's fastest solo playing is his fastest bits in SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (his solo after Mick says, "Uh get down, Hippie!" and again after Mick says, "Umm mean it, get down!"

Can you think of faster-or-equally-as-fast moments of Keith's in other Stones songs?

>> Can you think of ... <<

sure, but that's not the way to listen to Keith.

>> Mick says, "Uh get down, Hippie!" <<

"get down at it" isn't it?

Yes, I think the start of the SFTD solo is probably his fastest moment ever. Maybe some of his playing in Melody is equally fast, can't remember now.

He plays a very fast run of notes towards the end of Waiting On A Friend from the PPV Hampton,'81. It's pretty obvious he's excited he pulled it off because he's hopping around like a kid after the song is over. Freakin' awesome

On all the old Chuck Berry songs, like Come On, Around and Around etc.

Some of his licks on Waiting On A Friend or Rock And A Hard Place (both live, 81 and 89). He is playing some spanish fills in a surprisingly fast tempo.

The ending of Tie You Up is pretty fast too (both the bass and the guitar lick).

I read it was "Get down, hit me".

"Hold On To Your Hat" also comes to mind for me, though I have to wonder if it wasn't sped up a bit by the producer. I have just never before or since heard Keith do runs that fast.

I agree with all songs mentioned so far.
Hold on to your Hat" was the one I first thought of too.
Wasn't there a video of a performance of a very late era Keith where he is sitting down, and he is playing big bodied old style guitar? I THINK it is Bernard Fowler sitting next to him. They are doing an old style number. It is one of those settings with a lot of seasoned studio type musicians. The type that Keith would look up to, and where he could absolutely not fake it. He is asked to take the solo. So you can tell he really leans into it. But I can not recall what song it is. He gets pretty quick there too.

Isn't that C. Mingus' "Oh Lord Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me"? It used to be on youtube.

He plays some fast notes at the end of Star Star. He does it live most of the time on '73 live versions too

Also on some live versions of Whip comes down from '78. Memphis comes to mind. But it's had to say of it's him or Ronnie

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

There's a quote somewhere where Keef is asked why to Heavy Metal guys play so many notes. Keef says something like "becasue they can't find the right ones".

when he ripped off his guitar and swung it at the fan who leaped onstage in 1981. That was his fastest guitar moment, bar none.

That's good. I have a friend who's a jazz snob who was sneering as I played SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL in my car because it's only four chords. So I quoted him a George Harrison line: "The Beatles throw a bunch of chords into a song when we feel the song isn't very good. We try to disguise the song's weakness with a bunch of chords." My friend didn't like that idea that fewer chords might be a plus!

Those old videos is superplayback, and Brian wasnt exactly happy with show like that...up to before 'Out of our heads Brian was the fast solo-player and Keith as always the rhythm-section together with Charlie and Bill..check it out...

Is there some video of these passages in Waiting On A Friend from 81 than everyone is mentioning? that sounds interesting.

from about 4:57 on. (Camera moves away from Keith as he plays the lick.)

Great version.

I don't think this is playback, to me it sounds live
