Disc 2 on now and loving it:

Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Nearness of You
Magnificent version of Worried About You

The edits and overdubs. Unnecessary and too obvious. I mean, if they didn't like the slow part of Rocks Off (which, by the way, wasn't such a MAJOR screw up in the first place and could have easily remained untouched) just cut and paste from another show. Most of us wouldn't have noticed. But who on earth could be so stupid to cut the very climax of Rocks Off? Same for Knocking. If they wanted more beef in the guitar section, overdub some guitar. Fair enough. But why a second open G? I could go on and on ...

A part from that, disk 2 is a good selection of songs, and is very well played.

Why? It's not very lovable. CYHMK is a pale shadow of its former glorious self, for starters.

By the time Live Licks was released there were already enough Live Stones albums and most of them better than Live Licks. Never bothered to get it.

Does this mean I am a fan and not a fanatic?

The nearness of you is just so raw and beautiful, It's worth to get it
just for that track.

They should have out Rocks Off. It's reputation would have been much better.

Cool the way you omitted an important part just like they did. Brilliant and ironic. LOL smoking smiley

Disc two has its moments, especially Monkey Man rocks, disc one is sadistic.

I always actually really enjoyed it. As mentioned, disc 2 is a really good song selection. I love Worried About You on here, so much so that I can't hear the studio version anymore. Monkey Man is great, Neighbours is excellent, Nearness Of You. There are alot of great tracks. Personally, the only flaw I see is with Rocks Off, which they cut out the climax for no reason, and if it was so bad just don't include the song instead of butchering it. Otherwise, I think its a great disc. I have no problem with Can't You Hear Me Knocking and think its great on here.

Disc 1 kind of sucks but I do still enjoy it. Its a good way to sell the product with one hits disc and one rarities disc, and I agree it gets a bad rap because at that time there was just alot of Stones live material it seemed a tad overdone. But overall I think its a very good release.

I must second 71Tele's post - CYHMK on this release is really bland, the improv section in particular finds Ron and Keith completely uninspired. One of the more embarrassing examples of the Stones' "mighty guitar interplay". So edits or not, the song, as performed, is certainly a shadow of its former glory - much like Rocks Off. Luckily, those few dates last year found them properly concentrating on the music again.

Live Licks is a decent enough listen once in a blue moon, if unexciting overall. The version of Street Fighting Man (with the spot-on studio vocal overdub from Michael Phillip) is charged with energy though!

The cuts and edits are VERY annoying. But I still like the album. Even both sides.
Not all tracks of course but that goes for most of the other live albums as well. But I like the sound and the mix - and many songs are well done for their later era.
If it wasn't for those terrible cuts, etc it could even have been a late fave for me. Shame they ruined an otherwise good record. Its still not really clear who was responsible for this.

Brown Sugar, despite being hacked up a good bit, sounds killer. Street Fighting Man - a lot of energy, closest thing to the GYYYO! version I've ever heard; Monkey Man, Nearness Of You and You Don't Have To Mean It - excellent.

Deplorable: Rocks Off, Start Me Up, Angie, Honky Tonk Women.

Re: Show a bit of love for Live Licks

LL is the one release (apart from "Shine A Light") that I never bothered getting. Which fro me is close to sacrilege. So, this thread made me want to re-think this. I go to official RS site to hear samples of this release. The tracks they use for samples are all the official versions. I get "Evrybody.." from '65, "Worried.." from '81, the real "Rocks off' etc.

Palace, get Live Licks for disc 2, especially Monkey Man, The Nearness Of You and You Don't Have To Mean It although I think you'd like Brown Sugar and Street Fighting Man from disc 1 as well.

The mix job on this live album is stellar.

If Gimmie Shelter and CYHMK were on the same disc, I might actually listen to it a second time.

Nearness Of You is perfection. Worried About You and Monkey Man are good as well.

However, we have most of the songs already - on Four Flicks. What else than the butchered CYHMK was not released on FF, Beast Of Burden?

There's a different version of Street Fighting Man and Rock Me Baby without Angus and Malcom is not on Four Flicks either.

Monkey Man is from MSG show and is unadultered. No edits and no overdubs...thank god.

obviously Rocks Off version is a disgrace.

I think there was a Japan-only Bonus track on it.
Don't remember which, but I'd be grateful to get a FLAC of it...

Thanks in advance
