Is Charlie quoted in Bitch's lyrics?

Two sources around

You've got to mix it Charlie,
You've got to fix it
It must be love
It's a bitch.

You got to mix it child
You got to fix it
It must be love
It's a bitch

He's not quoted - he's mentioned.
Mick no longer sings it that way.
I reckon Charlie didn't find it amusing.

I seem to remember early on that there was a line that said, "Charlie, you've got the sticks..."

As for Bill, do you think he also not amused by that?

Oh, the singer, he looks angry
At being thrown to the lions
And the bass player, he looks nervous
About the girls outside

And the drummer, he's so shattered
Trying to keep up time
And the guitar players look damaged
They've been outcasts all their lives

Feeling so tired, can't understand it
Just had a fortnight's sleep
I'm feeling so tired, Ow! so distracted
Ain't touched a thing all week
I'm feeling drunk, juiced up and sloppy
Ain't touched a drink all night
I'm feeling hungry, can't see the reason
Just ate a horse meat pie
Yeah when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog
Yeah when you lay me out
My heart is beating louder than a big bass drum, alright
Yeah, you got to mix it child
You got to fix it must be love
It's a bitch
You got to mix it child
You got to fix it but love
It's a bitch, alright
Sometimes I'm sexy, move like a stud
Kicking the stall all night
Sometimes I'm so shy, got to be worked on
Don't have no bark or bite, alright
Yeah when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog
Yeah when you lay me out
My heart is bumpin' louder than a big bass drum, alright
I said hey, yeah I feel alright now
Got to be a...
Hey, I feel alright now
Hey hey hey
Hey hey yeah...

Yes Goo - we know some sources have it that way.
It's not "child", though, and never has been.

Pretty sure it's not "charlie"

It's "child"

The only mentioning of Charlie in Bitch is in the 1972 live versions:

"Charlie, won't you get down with it...".

It's never been "child", not even once by mistake

I've always heard "Charlie" rather than "child" but take it to mean a generic term for a man like "Joe" or "buddy", thinking that "Charlie" might have just been one of those terms around that time in the UK or elsewhere.

That's how it sounded the first time I heard it--"Well you've got the fix and Charlie you've got the sticks." So whatever the line actually is, that's how I will always hear it.

And copying one another, for better or (in this case) worse.

I'm convinced that Charlie is mentioned in the original studio version. For live performances, I think I've heard Mick switch between 'Charlie' & 'child'.

Its child. Always has been.

I think Mick's bummed cause the song needs to be mixed too many times

It's "Charlie". There's a piece in that 70s soft-cover Stones book with the Exile-era b&w photos on the cover where they are on a plane or something and Anita says "Mix it, Charlie".

Yep, I always heard child too. I'll need convincing that's it's "Charlie". Child is way more likely.

Anyone want to make a non-financial wager on "Charlie, you've got the sticks?"

Where does it say that? you not even close.

yeah, you got to mix it child
You got to fix it must be love
It's a bitch
You got to mix it child
You got to fix it but love
It's a bitch, alright

Where does it say "you got the sticks"

You can hear the m in mix clear as day and the f in fix.

Would be interested to know if these people hearing "Charlie" and "you got the sticks" are native English speakers or if they are multi-lingual or European people that are hearing "Charlie" in there. Because the difference between "a" and "i" sound in this situation is very slight, very subtle, and part of it is based on context; because what Mick really says is the African-American or Southern variation, "chile" as in Hendrix's Voodoo Chile, or "Ooh Child" by the Five Stairsteps, where the "d" is largely silent.

The only reference to Charlie is in things like, "come on Charlie, hit it hard" on variolus live bootleg versions from '72.

According to The Rolling Stones File (songbook), copyright 1971 ABCKO Industries Inc., U.S.A., which I am looking at now:
Yeah, you got to mix it child, ya got to fix it...

Must be right then! smiling smiley
