question for audiophile buffs on this site

Over several years, I have been slowly upgrading my stereo system one piece at a time. One of passions in life is listening to great music and my ultimate goal is to own a very high end system that would allow hours of great listening pleasure. At the present time, my sound system consists of a McIntosh C220 tube pre-amp, a McIntosh MC252 amp, B & W 804 speakers, and a Rotel RCD 1072 CD player. I also utilize a Cambridge DAC Magic digital to analog converter for more clean, dynamic sound. I have a birthday coming up this month, and I am thinking of replacing my Rotel CD player with possibly a Cambridge 840 CD player OR upgrading my digital analog converter to a Bryston BDA 1....Any thoughts out there?

How about a beautiful pair of NOLA speakers? High-gloss rosewood finish. A steal at $18,000.00.

Generally, I'd go for the DA converter. The Bryston BDA 1 appears to have a CS4398 DAC; it could be suffcient but I think I read there may be better ones. Also check what the opamps are.

You could also ask at a more specialised board, like Audio Asylum and Head-Fi.

When the guy says "huge price reduction", he means it. They were originally $55,000.00. I'll bet you could get him to go even lower.

Tatters- I know everything in life is relative, but where I'm coming from, $55,000.00 speakers just blows my mind....

Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers. You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers.

Turntables that won't skip in an earthquake. Speakers the size of refrigerators. I'll bet the folks living in the apartment downstairs don't care for that at all.

Certainly not if you play that type of music.

A hobby isn't about getting what you want. It's about the never-ending pursuit of trying to get what you think you need.

God I'm hoping that it isn't too late for me! That was like watching an intervention for audiophile junkies (LOL)!

BTW- thanks Isbz for your feedback...

PS- I'm greatful to have an understanding wife who "tolerates" my interest in acquiring music. She would rather see me indulge myself this way as opposed to other vices like my younger years which consisted of imbibing mood altering substances & whoring around..

Has anyone ever figured out why CD players always quit working after just a couple of years? It's never worth the price to fix one so you always wind up having to buy a new one. Has anyone ever had one that lasts a good long time? What a scam!

I bought a CD player in the eighties, and it's been working well up until now. I used it regularly for a period of like 10 years. I stopped using it because I bought an SACD player some years ago, but I've had no problems with it. For control functionality it's even better than the new player; much better thought out.

That might have to do with the difference between a 100 or a 1000 dollars player

They almost give away (standard) CD-players nowadays. You can get one for 20 Euro easily. Of course, the audiophiles wouldn,t consider them... .

I have a McIntosh system too with a Mc CD player. Rather than upgrading the CD player, I have a couple of processors between the CD player & the preamp. I have a separate digital to analog processor and a separate tube processor. I like the sound but wish I had kept my old-school Carver CD player. My bootleg Pink Floyd CDs sounded awesome through that Carver.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.
