Twenty years without Serge Gainsbourg

It's twenty years since the death of the astonishing Serge Gainsbourg and here are some clips to remember him by.

If you don't like one track, please try another; he wrote in a wide variety of styles.

"He was our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire... He elevated the song to the level of art" ~ François Mitterrand

The only one who durably impressed the makers of the best pop music in the world : the English. That's sayoing something...

The brand new 20-cd box (with previously unreleased "jewels" ) is crap though...

This is a special day as I am a huge fan.
My son is born dec 18 (...) but thanks to Gainsbourg really because her mother and I met each other because we were fans of SG.

All day long there will be some great things on radio.
Tonight listen to Gilles Peterson on FRance Inter. He makes a mix set.

Some with Sly DUNBAR and Robbie SHAKESPEARE ...

Dylan is a great one for Lyrics and music. Gainsbourg is too. If you understand french you will understand how delicious the words are

I saw Gainsbourg on stage around 1988. It was a show "au Mans" France during the "Funk" period. Gainsbarre wasn't drunk and he did a great job. Amazing lyricist, really. To play with words like he did and most of the time hitting the target is astonishing. Others french songwriters have tried but nobody come even close to Gainsburg. He had a gift with words and also music.
I still miss you serge Gainsburg.
Rock and Roll,

"Serge avec filtres sans cigarette" - as you see I'm only just learning french, but I've got the first part of his collected lyrics and have already gotten a vague sense of the genius "en lisant ses lignes"
