questions on the 2CD Some Girls release

SG is my favorite Stones CD since it was released. It would be appreciated if somebody can help me out with a few questions I have on the 2CD release:

1. how come Ian Stewart is not playing (at least not mentioned...) on the 'official' SG release (piano by Ian McL.), whereas he is mentioned on 5 out of the 11 songs from the bonus CD?

2. Chuck L. is mentioned as piano player on So Young. Is this a new version, as I presume CL was not involved with the Stones during the SG sessions?

3. Don Was/bass and Matt Clifford/percussion are mentioned on the song ' Dont' be a stranger' . I also presume they were not involved with the Stones during the 77/79 period. Is this also a much later recorder song? If so, why is it on the bonus disk?

Thanks in advance!

Kees

I don't remember if Stu played on SG, but I think he did.

So Young was a 1995 B-side with a keyboard-solo from Chuck added.

Clifford and Was overdubbed their takes on the deluxe release

Ooh, I didn't know they used RCA again after the 60's session there. cool smiley

In case the above detail is too detailed for the OP, the short answer is:
The tracks on the bonus disk originated in 77/78 but have been spiffed up more recently
with the additions/changes the good Deltics quoted the good NZentgraf about.

Aside from Spare Parts and Yellow Cab they worked on the wrong songs. And including post-Some Girls sessions tracks is just wrong...

Thanks for the valuable info guys!

Agree with the comment of Gaslightstreet.
and adding new vocals or whatever parts feels like kind of karaoke to me.

Would have been happy if they had released most of the outtakes in their original versions.

Keith wanted that session, because the band was still "hot" after touring smiling smiley

All very well apart from the fact that about 95% of the people who bought it would have wondered 'what the f**k is this' and played it once.

Rough demos with no proper vocals or lyrics might be a bit of a discovery for some fans when theyre seen as 'forbidden fruit' but releasing an album full of them is a stupid move for anyone who has to put their name and reputation on a commercial product.

I'd imagine the reason why they chose to add 'We Had It All' from a later session was because they 'had' to feature a song with Keith on lead vocals and as far as I'm aware there were no such songs recorded for Some Girls apart from 'before they make me run'.

Similar idea to the choice of 'Soul Survivor' on the Exile bonus disc with nonsensical Keith lyrics over the same backing track as the released take on the original album.

God knows what they'll do with the 'Sticky Fingers' deluxe as there wasnt even a Keith lead vocal on the original album.

The story I recall at the time was that they were stockpiling some songs in case Keith was sent to jail a couple of months later!

Yeah, i have heard that too, but I've also heard Mick saying that it was Keith who was eager to record...

Any of these bonus tracks released should be completed. This is what they did with Think I'm Going Mad, Highwire, the 94 version of So Young, etc. They went to a previous session and made it ready for release.

For many years we have heard the unreleased versions of Exile on SG tracks that we expected them to stay the same. Every released song has their unreleased versions and these are no different. I think it's pretty cool that 2 times now they were able to go in and finish up on that much stuff from a session. They also must get some feeling of completion and seeing that countless hours of previous studio time & work did not go to waste after all.

Some More Girls? That would have been a clever title for the bonus disc.

Yes, but it's a pitty that people, who were not at the original sessions, like Leavel, Was and Clifford, are now overdubbing stuff. I don't mind if Mick, Keith, Ron, or Charlie dub things.
