I'd never heard of a Pope resigning, though I'm no Papal expert. The story does say it's rare, so I guess it has happened. I thought somebody was Pope until they died. Even if you were in a coma for 10 years, you were Pope. I figured if you could just resign, John Paul II would have, but I guess he just decided to continue.

It's easy: The pope is the head of the catholic church and he's god's representative on earth. Thus he decides on the rules of game he plays.
btw: The first (and until today the last) pope who stepped down was Coelestin V. in 1294.

Grew up Catholic. 12 years of Catholic school. Several years as an altar boy.
Gave up on the church (and all organized religions) many years ago.
