I'd never heard of a Pope resigning, though I'm no Papal expert. The story does say it's rare, so I guess it has happened. I thought somebody was Pope until they died. Even if you were in a coma for 10 years, you were Pope. I figured if you could just resign, John Paul II would have, but I guess he just decided to continue.

Anybody know where I should send my resume?

Pope John Paul II did smoke a peace pipe with local Native Americans when he visited Arizona in 1987.

It's easy: The pope is the head of the catholic church and he's god's representative on earth. Thus he decides on the rules of game he plays.

btw: The first (and until today the last) pope who stepped down was Coelestin V. in 1294.

There was a rule?

No one told Pope Alexander VI.

His words have killed many, hopefully he'll take the gentlemens way out.

Headline says "Pope resigns due to advanced age".

I had thought the prerequisite for becoming pope was advanced age.

He may have taken a buyout...
Perhaps he will take a position at some other religion?

He grew paranoid about flying. He's going to start his own church on a smaller level so he doesn't have to deal with the egos of God and his son. (They fired the Holy Spirit).

Some Catholics won't see his departure as a bad thing.

They've had 8 years of this:

I guess he was the only one who could beat The Stones in popularity in South America. Don't ask me why.
His version of Saint of me svcked big time.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Grew up Catholic. 12 years of Catholic school. Several years as an altar boy.

Gave up on the church (and all organized religions) many years ago.

Be good to your fellow human beings, good to the earth and tolerate differences (even of musical opinions!)

I love organized religion. Its the disorganized ones that are a little hard on the ears...

It's threads like this that make me glad I never met some of you people face to face. What a waste of my time it would have been to meet some of you. I consider myself more of a Christian than a Catholic so I never really thought of The Pope as someone to worship/put on a pedestal but you can still respect the man instead of putting out a bunch of silly, smarmy statements that only result in you making yourself look like a dope.

I believe some of the comments in this thread are simply good natured humor so don't be offended if you are in that category but there are certainly a few dimwits here that never miss an opportunity to show their true ignorance.

Most assanine statement I've ever seen on IORR and I think BV would probably agree with me.

Modern times - Pope resigns, Queen in Holland retires, it used to be a lifetime position. God knows if they get a full blown pension with all kind of luxury....
