OT:Need help with Beatles "A Day in the Life"

Need help with settling a bet about A Day in the Life. After PAul sings "somebody spoke and I went into a dream" There's the "AhhhhAHHHh" with the heavy orchestration accompanying it, For years I thought it was John singing the "AHHHHH" part, but a friend of mine swears it's Paul. There's a 6 pack bet riding on this so I need a definitive answer, and I hope it's John!

It certainly sounds like John (with lots of reverb on his voice). It's possible that both John and Paul were singing that part together...with a strong emphasis on John's voice in the mix. Maybe you can find some alternate version for a definite answer. Otherwise, just split the 6-pack with your friend...it's Christmas after all.

I'm no expert, but it certainly sounds like John. I can't think of Paul doing anything quite as stoner sounding.

It's John for sure. That was his chord progression and his voice. Paul's section ends with the word dream.

I've been listening to this song/album since it debuted, and I have no doubt it is John. I'm surprised there is even any question. His voice is unmistakable. Great song, one of the best albums ever in any genre.

I always thought it was John but read somewhere that it was both John & Paul.

So that'd be three beers each, I suppose!

I just read somewhere that part was actually sung by some guy named Billy Shears. Maybe he was a session musician or something?

I've heard it twice live, once outside with just his band at the Clapton Guitarfest and once with added
orchestral instruments at MSG. A reason to live, for sure. cool smiley

Enjoy your beer because it's Paul. The Repeat Echo goes on about halfway through that part, giving Paul a more nasal tone somewhat similar to John's.

However, and this is a big however, about halfway through at that section is a meandering high harmony part, which is almost inaudible on the final mix. On isolation, it appears to be a close call between J & P, but Paul usually took the higher harmonies, so I give the nod to him.

So the basic "Ahhhs" in that section are Paul, not John.

This info comes from the book Recording The Beatles, a huge tome about, well, recording The Beatles. Highly recommended.

Yep, and Paul is singing on 'Strawberry Fields Forever' just as Ringo is on 'Yesterday'...

Sorry to disappoint you, but that's Paul on that part on ADITL.
And as Paul said once, "The truth is sometimes painful."
