I know the Police have lost a lot of cachet over that last few years, but Ghost In The Machine was a monster album, and more coherent as a concept than Tattoo You. It also had a huge hit, 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic', and some great songs of depth with 'Invisible Sun' and 'Secret Journey'.

My favorite track on it is probably Darkness.

Freeze Frame sounded like a very modern record in 1981. From a today's point of view the synthesizers make it old-fashioned. That's the difference to the Stones: Probably their last long player that was state of the art but not out of time the next year/decade was Satanic Majesties.

One of the best albums of 1981? "Fire Of Love" by The Gun Club.
But I like Tattoo You as well...

The unbiased answer would have to be Phil Collins Face Value (In the air tonight) or something like that. U2:s October was a great album. But TY was considered a great album by everyone wasnt it. An album you had to have. Not just the fans. The last great album by the Stones.

Nightclubbing - Grace Jones

That would be one of my votes.

Man, that's leftfield and what an album. Saw Colin several times touring this album. Thanks for reminding me cc. Will dig it out now as not heard it for a good 25 years.

Definitely not.

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts - Eno/Byrne
Prayers on Fire - The Birthday Party
Nightclubbing - Grace Jones
Flowers of Romance - PIL
Slates - The Fall
What's This For? - Killing Joke
Pirates - Rickie Lee Jones
Kollaps - Einsturzende Neubauten
Computer World - Kraftwerk
Shot of Love - Bob Dylan
Dare - Human League

You're putting Human League and Kraftwerk in the same league as one of the Stones' best albums? confused smiley Each to his own.

Imo, Shot Of Love is not among Dylan's best albums.

Not even his best "Jesus album", even though there are few absolutele gems in it, like "Lenny Bruce" and "Every Grain of Sand". I woud say The Stones beated Bobby easily in 1981. But Bob would take with a small marginal the round of 1983, 1986 would be even, and Bob would knock out The Stones in 1989 and once again in 1997.

But as far as the original question goes, TATTOO YOU was the album that made me a Rolling Stones fan, and one can still see the results, so....

And besides, after reading all the titles suggested here by now, I would still claim that TATTOO YOU is the best of them all. 1981 wasn't in fact any big year of albums - there is not many one could call true classics, or that any artist made their absolute killer or masterpiece or career-defining album then. The punk phase was over, and the 'real' 80's sound was just to be shaped. Maybe that's why TATTOO YOU and the Stones over-all did so well then?

TY was definitely the best Stones album of '81.

What about...

1234 - Ronnie (edit: beat me to it come on!)

El Rayo-X - David Lindley (one of my faves)

I don't find Oh Mercy so good, and seemingly I'm one of the few that still regard SW a great album.

Good As I've Been To You and Under A Red Sky are brilliant, though. Time Out Of Mind is remarkably overrated, imo.

In general, I don't like Dylan's "blues-where nothing is happening, but the lyrics-approach, squeazed thru the Lanois-grinder. Only when he's stripping it down, playing alone - or with minimal orchestration.

There was no contest, imo, although there are couple of nice tunes on Ronnie's album.

I think so, too - although strangely, had it been released in 1980, I dont think it would have been in my top 5 or 6.

A lot of acts released great records in 1980 (especially in the second half of the year) - Springsteen, Bowie, The Clash etc - and then didnt release new albums in 1981.

Whilst there was no bonafide Bruce/E Street Band album in '81, Gary US Bonds' 'Dedication' filled the gap nicely....

That's interesting. I haven't listen the album for, say, 28 years...

No offense, but at the time when I get to know 1234 and GIMME SOME NECK I came to the conclusion that this guy is not able to come up with any song that has some kind of sense or original idea in it, not to mention a decent melody etc. Just senseless noise and riff-circulating from start to end. (The only expection to a rule is "Seven Days" written by guess whom...) And since he is not any virtuoso as a player, there is nothing to discover from that point of view either. But I find him having lots of interesting friends and name enough to release a solo album. But I still ask the point of releasing this stuff.

Party music? I'm not so drunk ever.

But I like - almost love - I'VE GOT MY OWN ALBUM TO DO. I don't know what happend to Ronnie's songcraft skills after that (and The Faces/Rod stuff). But the newest is decent, though - but once again: lots of intersting friends.

But who knows: maybe I should relisten 1234 again. At the time when I listened to it I wasn't a big fan of EMOTIONAL RESCUE either, but now I am.

Yeah, I like it too, but "gems" like Wind Howlin' Through, She Was Out There and Redeyes are not even close to the quality of the weakest tunes on TY, imo. Actually, my favourite Ronnie album is Now Look, and the opening number there is his masterpiece, imo.
