OT? Tupac hologram performance blows away Coachella! Stu, Brian now possible for 50th!
Posted by: superrevvy ()

The big story coming out of Coachella this weekend isn’t the epic Radiohead
set or all the celebrities making out in the VIP area, it’s the resurrection
of Tupac Shakur. Just a week after Easter, the rapper came back from the dead
… as a friggin’ hologram!

In what has to be one of the most talked about performances in history, Tupac
joined headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on Sunday night to perform several
hits including “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.”

The performance had Twitter going crazy, with celebrities like Rihanna and
Lebron James left in awe.

“#TupacBACK #unbelievable #IWASTHERE #STORY4myGrandKidz,” Rihanna wrote.

And LeBron James added, “Tupac at Coachella is crazy, dope and sends
chills through my body! Make sure y’all check that out. Looks 2 real!
#RIP2Pac.”

It really is too crazy to believe. If you missed it, check out the video below.

she also tweeted she had one of the best nights of her life, joining calvin

a little with BFF katy Perry (with a message for naturalust emblazoned on

i just love that she sends out all these pictures and messages as it happens.
no need to wait for The Sun or the paparazzi. Imagine if we knew every
single day what mick and keith were up to. She tweeted this yesterday for
people like me:

"Our highs are bliss, and our lows make us miss our highs. But my faith
stands firm in the most high, Jah."

One of the more interesting things, I haven't seen yet explained, is how they
got Tupac to speak and rap in the "now", addressing Snoop and Coachella
specifically. Dreamworks or Disney I'm guessing, and yes, that means they
could have a Stu hologram play piano in his style on a song that he
never played on in real life. Not saying they would or should, only that
they could.

I'll bet ya a real good Hendrix hologram playing new Hendrix-like stuff is
right around the corner.

Isn't Elvis still out on a hologram tour? He was here in Sweden, as a hologram, with a big band a couple of years ago.

Yeah gotta love the message she was puttin out to all those chest gawkers. I bet it even made sense after she sang some snarky jabbing tune. lol

This is definately cool entertainment revvy, obviously ALOT of people had a LARGE time at that show. Whoo Hoo!

All these holograms , it's like life is becoming more like the Oz scene in the Widard of Oz all the time now. Pretty soon we'll probably quit caring who's behind the curtain.

This indeed sounds like something Mick won't pass up given the opportunity to use it in a Stone's show. Stu and Brian I would love to see, hologram or not. Cool post. peace

It means the Stones can do ANYBODY SEEN MY BABY live with a hologram of Biz Markie rapping. Or they could just have the real Biz Markie since he's still alive....

from mtv news:

"We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre's vision to bring this back to
life," said Nick Smith, president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that
projected and staged the hologram. "It was his idea from the very beginning
and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come
to life."

According to a spokesperson for Dre, the lifelike image of Shakur was created
by Hollywood effects house Digital Domain, the Oscar-winning CG factory
that
made CG images of Brad Pitt in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Jeff
Bridges in "TRON: Legacy," Kevin Bacon in "X-Men: First Class" and Rooney
Mara in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." The virutal 'Pac was the vision of
Dre, who worked with his longtime partner Philip Atwell of Geronimo
Productions and Dylan Brown of The Yard.

Smith said he wasn't allowed to talk about the creative aspects of the
production — including how the hologram was able to seemingly perform the set
in synch with Snoop and whether all the vocals were 'Pac's — but he did say
that his company has the ability to recreate long-dead figures and visually
recreate them in the studio. "You can take their likenesses and voice and ...
take people that haven't done concerts before or perform music they haven't
sung and digitally recreate it,"
he said.

The hologram was the latest visual magic pulled off by AV, which is also
behind the 2005 Grammys performance featuring Madonna and the holographic
members of the Gorillaz, as well as holograms used in concert by Celine Dion
and the Black Eyed Peas.

The Tupac hologram was several months in the planning and took nearly four
months to create in a studio and though Smith was not able to reveal the
exact price tag for the illusion, he said a comparable one could cost
anywhere from $100,000 to more than $400,000 to pull off. "I can't say how
much that event cost, but I can say it's affordable in the sense that if we
had to bring entertainers around world and create concerts across the
country, we could put [artists] in every venue in the country," he said.

The life-size Tupac was amazingly realistic, down to the late rapper's
signature tattoos, Timberland boots, jewelry and movements, all of which were
also recreated under the direction of Dre and his team.

It's Elvis' live concert footage--no hologram-- on a large screen with the original musicians playing live to the recording.

huffington post:

As live visual performance technology such as Musion Eyeliner, the
holographic projection system utilized by AV Concepts and its partner in the
Coachella endeavor, Digital Domain Productions, becomes increasingly
sophisticated, it might pave the way for a new kind of entertainment
experience.

While AV Concepts has helped other groups, such as Gorillaz, utilize
holographic technology, their Tupac seems to have broken new ground in
realistic rendering. If companies can deliver a convincing live hologram
performance for less what it costs to send a band on tour, this resurrection
might signal a new dawn for live entertainment.

With the right technology, companies can "take people that haven't done
concerts before or perform music they haven't sung and digitally recreate
it," Smith told MTV.

This is to say nothing of the priceless opportunity given to hip-hop fans at
Coachella. Hologram Tupac might be an elaborate surrogate, but to many,
including real live perfomers like Rhianna and the Roots' Questlove, the vibe
was real enough. Imagine what it might mean to fans of the Beatles to see a
live, hologram-performed rendition of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

Thanks Justin, for the correct info. Obviously I didn't attend the concert. As I remember the show got good reviews though. But I may be wrong there also...

It's a neat parlor trick I guess, but is it really any different than say, having a well rehearsed actor who looks like Tupac come out on stage pretending to be him? And is it really wise to be putting the idea into impressionable dumbass kids' minds that, although Tupac was shot dead 15 years ago , he still survives in hologram form? How long before one of them thinks "Hey, I'm gonna kill myself so I can be a hologram like 'Pac!" or maybe "I'm gonna pop a cap in that suckers head. He'll be fine, he'll just become one of them supafly holograms!"

The implications are quite enormous if you think about it. Visual media in that detail is able to create hidden truth's in our subconscious.

Advertising people will be on this very soon. As for me, I can now think of an avatar I want to represent myself as I start aging so I can live forever and preform music and singing well into my december years without people wondering if I look good enough to actually pull it off (ala the Keith saga).

The future business value of such a process is huge. I wouldn't doubt if they try to patent the technology or process somehow to prevent others from doing what could be done here. The fact it made such a big impact on the trend setters in our society says much. peace

By the way it's Pepper's ghost technique (invented in the 19th century!)

Same technique used here :

thanks, kowalski, cool!

The real difference, of course, here is the ability to take the entirety of an
artist's audio output in a certain time period, let's say for example,
Keith Richards 1968-1978 and process it to derive algorithms that would
allow you then to have "Keith Richards 1968-1978" play behind Adele.

That's the real story here, and when the controllers of Hendrix's estate
authorize new Jimi recordings on this basis, then we got a whole new
creature on our hands. Obviously not equal to the original, but would you
say without any redeeming entertainment value whatsoever? To have, for example,
new Hendrix-algorithm music as part of a future James Bond soundtrack?

Well, ready or not, its coming.

i once translated a pre-publication version of a book called The American Replacement of Nature
by a cat called William Irwin Thompson that was largely about this kind of phenomenon.
apparently the English-language version of the book got a lot of its teeth pulled during the copy-editing,
so the published version isn't as breathtakingly whoa-nelly as the copy i was given to work on,
but i bet it's still a great read. Thompson largely blames - dig this! - Walt Disney and his "imagineers"
for taking the art and technology of manipulation through images to such appalling heights.
his description of the Hall of Presidents at Disney World is brilliant: robot presidents come to life
one by one in a darkened theater to the sound of fife and drum, and the audience, disoriented by the spectacle,
"begin to sob in spasms of patriotism"

ahem, i mean: good book about scary ideas. see if you can find it

Ya know I think the whole hologram thing for the stones could be pushed further: Hologam the Whole band! They don't have to actually go on tour, but get paid as if they are. Wouldn't it be great to see Mick. Keith, Charlie, and Bill circa 1965 playing Start Me Up? Ohhh the possibilities....! (sarcasm btw)
