Remember it, german TV show called PIT.
Must be an early show, maybe East Troy?

When they reached Europe, the rough sound was gone (go to 1:16):

i had started the exact same post ca. a year ago.

this the ultimative keith sound, it couldn´t get any better than that.

this videoclip was my stones awakening at the age of 11.

now, seeing them 70 times live it´s still the best for me.

One thing about using Start Me Up as the opener: you can tell what kind of night it's going to be by Keith and Ronnie's playing. Keith comes out smoking on rhythm...life is good. Keith comes out posing and Woodie is goofing around...it's going to be sloppy and possibly embarrassing.

But if Keith is on fire......there is nothing more cool.

You really can't compare, because there are different sources of sound. This last clip sounds like a monitor mix. It's always thin.

Still, you've got a point. The sound seemed more raw on the US leg of the tour.

Both mixes are similar but in first Keith`s amp is much louder than even drums and he has more saturated amp - Fender Bassman. He uses volume pot for more or less amp`s distortion so it could be the case. But even in the middle of tour he use different toys like small Oahu amps to change his tone a bit.

Still using the Boogie in 89, no?

In the first clip there is no "guitar mix", because the only guitar you can hear is the one of Keith. This is the reason for the raw, i.e. the loud guitar sound ...

East Troy was an amphitheater show with limited space for all that elaborate staging. I was there and then saw the Full Monty a week or so later in St. Louis. The video looks like it could well be Alpine Valley (East Troy).

Quite possibly the first clip is only the distorted amp you hear...I understand Keith uses two amps, one distorted while the other is clean. These are then mixed to create the sound. As I said I believe the clip is only sourcing the distorted fender amp.

Maybe....but I was at 2 of the 3 East Troy shows (9/9 & 9/11 if I recall the dates correctly) and
he didn't wear that jacket for SMU. The 3rd show (9/8) which was added later...I believe
Mick wore a leather jacket...and I think it was raining (not that that mattered because he
had shelter under the amphitheater roof). Also....looks like a very fresh haircut. Might be a
couple weeks earlier than Alpine Shows (or much later in the tour). But..I might be wrong.

re: staging

can't really say. I know the downsized it for Alpine Valley but since i was so close to the
stage it was difficult to see the wide-view of the full stage.....and at the time I had nothing
to compare it to.

do we know the date of the broadcast?? that might give a hint..if it was early in the
tour etc...

IORR............but I like it!

Listen to what's on Flashpoint and that's the perfect mix of what Keith was playing through - a little bite on the clean, a little dirty overall, very . Seventh Of July is just the clean one - sounds weak somehow.

See, and I think the Tokyo 1990 show sounds even cleaner and more sterile. It's well played and recorded, but the guitars sometimes sound just too polite.

i think this is from a tv-special made by "dolezal & rossacher" (DoRo),
they also produced some videos & other stones tv-specials,
like "let it bleed" in 2002.
they made keith's guitar louder, to explain the sound of the stones.
i have it on vhs, somewhere

From left to right: '59 Twin, recovered, two Marshall '68 50 watt plexi amps, '59 Tweed Twin.
