Down The Road Apiece (1981 U.S. Tour)

The studio rendition is one my absolute favourites. This, however, is total dross. No wonder they dropped it from the set-list. It just doesn't work at 200mph. I had always been curious as to how the song sounded live in '81 - terrible, as it turns out.

Am I allowed to state that I like it?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Bill is tops on this! Good enough version for me.

One of their best early covers ... should be whipped out more often.

Actually quite a nice version, but the sound quality spoils it a bit.

I like the live version, though it would have been cool to cut the guitars for a few bars and let Stu's piano be heard.

As usual....fantastic, terrific. Rocknroll.

Generally speaking, typical of latter day Stones, up tempo for cheap excitement sake obliterating the slower, sexier tempo. But when you are on the grand stage you make grand gestures for the grand audience.

It´s a fantastic version. Guitars, speed and piano! Rock´n´Roll!

So why then are they playing each and every song since 1989 slower than they did from '63 to '82?

A mess. Charming maybe, but still a mess.

Like all the 1981 stuff, sped up and hurried like they can't wait to get it over with.

This really isn't that bad. At least when compared to so many other possible examples of live songs/performances from the same era.

But...this is a perfect example of Jagger's sadly too typical 1981 "I got constipation and although I'm desperately trying, I just can't pass this stubborn turd" vocal style. He's straining at the stool, and he sounds a little like a cow giving birth to a fat, chubby calf.

But guitar-wise, it's light years beyond what Keith has done since, well, probably this. (Crappy recording quality here notwithstanding....). Which, granted, isn't saying too much. (And yes, his guitar efforts in 1989, 1995, and 2002 are objectively considered, and summarily dismissed.)

I like it. Is this from Philadelphia? However, I don't like the sound of those amps, Boogie heads and EV cabinets (later Boogie cabinets). 1978 had the best "amp" sound.

Yeah, they covered it so well that it was left off of Let's Spend the Night Together.......................

When to Going to a Go Go and 20 FR first appear on this tour?

It's not the sound of the amps and cabs what you're hearing here. It's the thin, spiky, treble mono video board recording that makes the sound.

A little bit punky, ragged, too fast of course, just Stones on coke, but I like it ...

"terrible, as it turns out."

Just your opinion of course... They did some great versions of this song in 81 and Stu played wonderful licks on it! He obviously TRULY enjoyed that part of the setlist.

How is this terrible?? Great guitar playing, a swinging piano and a band that cooks! What more can one ask for? thumbs up

Yes, vocaliom, I noticed Bill on that track too. tomk, I would say not Phila because in Phila, KR broke a string during the opening and essentially didn't play the rest of the way.

I believe "coked up" is the right word for it. Being unrehearsed, sloppy and coked up was considered cool in the 70s. I don't know if it was considered cool in 1981 though. Maybe it was that that Jagger eventually grasped, hence the Vegas era to come...

You're kidding, right?

Both are great. The first one with its naive, innocent drive and the 81-version for its raggedness, extremely well-played guitars and pianos and swing. Only weak link on the latter is Mick, who is out of breath...

Then again, there is absolutely NOTHING unrehearsed about this version from 1981.
