The archetypal Stones Song

A freind of mine asked me yesterday what was the archetypal Stones song, he was wanting this information for a piece he was writing and not being a huge Stones fan he came to me. This got me thinking...at first I concluded that there wasn't such a song as they hop from one genre to another, but then I thought there must be one and offered 'Can't You hear me Knocking' for the following reasons; it has the superb riff from Keith, classic Jagger vocals, great drumming from Charlie, outstanding Lead work from Taylor and it segues into that amazing jazz ending showing the versatility and creativity ofthe band. Add to all that it has the Stones swagger and baudy feel.

I would love to hear your thoughts on which you would class as the classic stones song confused smiley

Very difficult question.....

But I think I would go for Tumbling Dice?

Though I'd probably pick something else tomorrow!

I think Can't You Hear me Knocking is not really archetypical, mainly because of the Santanaesque
soloing.
But then: what can be archetypical for a band that excisted 50 years and went through a lot
of stages, played with numerous genres and had different players over the years?

I am rather sure Doxa will be able to make a thorough analysis of this, but if one should ask
me to pick just one song that takes only one second to recognize as being a Stones song
I'd go for All down the line.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Brown Sugar.
Great riff, instrumental build up, added percussion at some point (Jimmy Miller era), engaging vocals, the small new elements near the end to keep it fresh (singalong "whoa!" and guitar lick).
The sax solo may seem slightly out of "place" with a standard song, if there is one, but I think most will get the bands gist from this track.

Satisfaction is generally regarded as the "Stones Anthem"?

But if I only could pick one Stones song that would represent them it would be Jumpin' Jack Flash. Probably the best riff ever written.

It would have to be a song which is archetypical for ALL the Stones-eras.

I suggest The Last Time.

While listening to "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man" yesterday I was thinking,
That it really captures the concept of their early blues sound in the best ways. I think this one can represent their early years up to 1967.

I'll repeat what I said last time this question was asked:

Honky Tonk Women. Rude, funny and irresistible to dance to.

Yeah, I don't know if there is such a thing, but if I had to choose, I too would go with Tumbling Dice.

While Can't You Hear Me Knockin is one of my favorites, if not favorite. Satisfaction is the archetypal Stone's song. The riff, the riff and the riff. Great swagger, raunchy, and inventive take on blues. Full of angst and anger.

Hand of Fate. Archetypal in that it is a "typical" Stones song, you identify it from the first beat . . all the elements are there.

For which era?

60s - Satisfaction
70s - Tumbling Dice
80s - Start Me up (although it was an older song)
90s - Out Of Control
00s - Rough Justice

Great song, but a total rip off of Fanny Mae, the cover from The Chess Sessions.

Brian Jones era - All Over Now, Little Red Rooster

Mick Taylor era - Honky Tonk Woman, Dance Little Sister

Ron Wood era - Beast Of Burden, When The Whip Comes Down

Dance Little Sister and Hand of Fate are basically the same song.

In my world the archetypal Stones song has to come from the original Rolling Stones, namely the Brian Jones era, and It's all over now and Red Rooster is excellent choices..Honky Tonk is also Brian or?

I disagree on the choice of these songs, since both It's all over now and Little Red Rooster
were covers. If covers are the archetypal songs, than The Stones are the archetypal coverband?
Is that what you say?

Chosing the Brian Jones Era as the archetypal Era for the band (and there is something to defend
that choice) is rather limiting, because they had so much changes in their musical approach
after that Era. Jumpin' Jack Flash and Street Fighting Man would be good choices, as would
be Under My Thumb, Get off of my cloud, Satisfaction (of course) and The Last Time.

Like I wrote in my first post on this thread, it is hard to come up with something "archetypical"
for a band that had so much diversity over the years.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away
