Well, I hate to tell you, Naturalust, that "G" is indeed a key, and "open" is the tuning. It's still the key of G (until you capo it, of course).

This is very OT. For those of you who play the guitar, in which key do you usually play when you pick up your instrument? I almost always play in C, probably because I`ve been so inspired by Since I´ve been loving you and Tea for one by Zeppelin.

It's D, E, G and A in that order for me. At the end of the day, I love the first position open strings and how they interact with fretted ones. Cool question. Also D and E are good keys for the dobro and G is the best for the mandolin, which are often accompanying me.
As far as which do I play when I first pick up a standard tuned guitar? I usually warm up with riffs in E and songs in G. Old habits die hard. peace

For me it's the key that unlocks the door to my studio.
Other than that, it depends on the music I feel like playing.

It depends on what guitar I pick up. if it's an acoustic, G, C, D and E. If an electric, A, E, C. Of course it will also depend on the song...

Of course open G with a capo on the 4th (key of

I'm surprised no answers using minor keys. I'm guessing some of you are playing in the key of Em when you are saying E.
Here one in the key of E, it's not 4/4 time signature throughout which is probably why I still like it. Just two tracks of acoustic guitar in standard tuning. peace

I ditto that. am often playing in singalongs, in various groups, and i have developed the system of letting the people star singing and the i come in on the fitting key.
i find it remarkabele tha peole usulally star tin the key that suits them through the song to the finish.
