Great 1967 live pic - but who took it?
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()
Date: March 29, 2012 17:07

It's a great pic taken at Sunday Night at The London Palladium show 1967 and I, for one, have never seen it before but anyone know who took it - Michael Cooper or Gered Mankowitz perhaps?

And furthermore, are there any others? Over to you Stones' photo historians - with sssoul, His Majesty???

Credit to John Perry from whom I acquired the photo.

Great look and picture!

hm - interesting! their attire doesn't match the Palladium shots i have, or the backstage footage from that show.
well, maybe Bill's got on the same jacket, but the others are dressed pretty differently.
it doesn't really look like the shots i have from the february 5th Eamonn Andrews Show, either - like i said up there: hm!

as for credits ... it warms the Deparment of Due Credit's heart that you want to credit it properly

edit, to reduce confusion: see page 2: it is the Palladium (my other shots are from backstage and rehearsals)
and the photo Silver Dagger's asking about was most likely taken by Ray Weaver

some London Palladium shots

- backstage at the London Palladium, january 22nd 1967 - my source didn't credit it,
but it sure could be by Gered Mankowitz

and just for good measure, a couple from the Eamonn Andrews Show, where they played She Smiled Sweetly - the first is from the rehearsal, plainly!
the Daily Mirror, who own it, recently blared in public that they think that's Bill :E

- Eamonn Andrews Show, february 5th 1967 - the only credit is Daily Mirror Archives

- Eamonn Andrews Show, february 5th 1967, courtesy of His Majesty - i don't know who took it, though

Anybody know the set list for the Palladium Show?

the good nzentgraf.de knows:

670122A 22nd January: UK TV (ATV) 'Sunday Night At The London Palladium'
- Connection (MJ/KR) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- Ruby Tuesday (MJ/KR) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- It's All Over Now (Bobby and Shirley Womack) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- Let's Spend the Night Together (MJ/KR) -live vocals on prepared backing track

there's a direly low-fi recording of at least part of it - It's All Over Now was a totally different arrangement,
and it sounds very very hot

Any guesses what they were laughing at?
Or was it a substance that caused it?
Wait, never-mind....

Looks like some of them forgot to take off their coats when they entered the Palladium. But I guess the Stones invented get-onstage-in-whatever-you're-wearing anyway...

as for credits ... it warms the Deparment of Due Credit's heart that you want to credit it properly, but sometimes it just isn't possible.
a lot of the photos from TV studios, press conferences etc ended up uncredited in some General Archive Bin, unfortunately.
Gered Mankowitz did take some backstage shots at the Palladium, but your photo doesn't look Geredly to me

Could it be an afternoon rehearsal for the Palladium show?

Well, according to the NME article, Paul Asher recorded it.
