Next from Stonesarchive? Maybe Madison Garden 1972?
Posted by: Kuntaman ()

Any guesses about the next golden nugget from Stonesarchive? I would like any of the three concert's from Madison Square Garden 1972.They have just released Hampton 1981 with Ron Wood, and also Texas 1978 with Wood, so maybe the next will be with Taylor. Since Brussel 1973 is out, it MUST be 1972 next??

I want the second-to-last (May 26) Earl's Court 1976 show out.
So the technical aspects of the download (sh!tty brick-walled mastering) will match the artistic ones (sh!tty appalling show all the way through) thumbs up

And the Brian Jones era? I hope they release something from this period, but fear we get only Atlantic City '89, San Diego '97, HBO 2003, Saitama 2006, all stuff that is well known to us.

Didn't realise the Stones were only formed in 1969.

and er....considering they've played about six times as many shows with Wood as they did with Taylor, why assume they're going to alternate releases from both eras?

They played 4 MSG shows in 1972, incidentally - as the Fort Worth and Philly shows were recorded and mixed for a live album, they'd be more likely candidates for a release from that tour, I'd have guessed.

Yeah I'm sort of thinking Philly '72 at some point. I hope so anyway. I think the first release threw us all off. Since we got so much Brussels stuff that we didn't have before, alot of us were thinking that they (the Stones or the Archive people or whoever make these decisions) were actually doing some research into what was readily available via bootleg and what wasn't. Most folks were thrilled to get mostly the 2nd Brussels show on that release. In reality though, if it had been the other way around and we just got the same old Brussels 1st show, nobody would have been surprised that we got Hampton '81 for the second release.

But since they seem to be going with well known bootlegs, Philly '72 and/or Texas '72 seem likely possibilities. New York would be great but so would a release compiled from the two Houston performances. "Philadelphia Special" is one of the best known Stones bootlegs after all.

Think about some famous (or maybe infamous depending on how you look at it) Stones bootlegs....

Live'r Than You'll Ever Be (Oakland '69)
Leeds '71
Philadelphia Special (Philly and Texas '72)
Perth '73
Los Angelos '75
Passaic '78
Atlantic City '89

I think we'll probably get releases along these lines. It would be great to get totally unheard stuff, and maybe at some point in the future we will, but for now, it looks like they're going with the most well known.

Atlantic City '89...wasn't that the next PPV after Hampton? BTW I've heard that Eagle Rock is going to release the Hampton DVD next.

Thanks, but in all honesty, I haven't a clue. I've no greater insight than anyone else.

If the six releases are meant to be a proper representation of the band's 50 years - and leaving aside personal taste - I would expect something like

1 from the Brian Jones era
2 (at most) from the Mick Taylor era
3 or maybe 4 from the Wood era - 2 of which would be from '89 onwards.

Whilst half of the shows they played were with Brian Jones, not that many were recorded professionally, so I'd expect that era to be underrepresented and the Taylor era overrepresented, as it's seen by fans and critics alike as something of a 'golden era', even though it only accounts for about 8.5% (172 shows) of the gigs they've ever played.

Of course, if this is an ongoing project continuing indefinitely beyond their 50th anniversary, then anything's possible.

All well known stuff, too. There are also quite good recordings from these shows. Of course it is possible, but I thought actually after Brussels (they took the most tracks from the afternoon show and not from the well known evening show, from which are the tracks of "our" Brussels) that they release anything unknown or anything what is poorly released on boots: Brian era (BBC?), '69 (Detroit e.g.), Mocambo of course, the ingenious Hartford show from '81 - what we've got now is a inferior version (with reference to VGP 270) of Hampton. I'm a little disappointed, to tell the truth.

Hmm, they will probably not release anything from the Brian Jones era, I don't think they have the copyrights to it! And Europe tour 1970 they where still in contract with Decca so, some more stuff with Taylor must be released.
what about Leciester and Glasgow 1976? Sounds GREAT on the small parts on video!!

I'm disappointed in comparison to how I felt over the Brussels release, which I thought was terrific. I'm happy to have Hampton '81 in official quality, but like you, and probably many others, I would have been more excited about something that we either hadn't heard, or was a tremendous upgrade in quality. But then again, we didn't get anything like this for a long, long time. So its' certainly better than nothin as far as I'm concerned.

Of course it is better than nothing. But referring to the sound I do not understand that the "boot people" have better ears and mixing competencies than Bob Clearmountain who could even use the master tapes.

I'd go for MSG 1972.

With that in mind MSG 75 with Clapton would be great or any 75/76 with some bonus tracks like Clapton on SFTD. Some Bonus tracks form inspired performances or other things of noteworthy, for example, with MSG 72 maybe some Bonus voice over form Boston's mayor springing The Stones from going to jail to make the show would fun.

Question: Is there more than one recording of the 75 show with Clapton on SFTD?

Which one is best?

Thanks.

They can release a performance of 'Satisfaction' from, say, 1972, but not from 1966?

Doubt it.

Different scenario to releasing or re-releasing material which ABKCO already had the rights to (Ya Yas/ RnR Circus etc)

There are also ABKCO era recordings on the Exile reissue.

...and there is a lot less problems with releasing pre-1970 material now than there used to be. Relations with ABKCO are a lot less problematic than they used to be, they are also now on the same label (apart from in the US).
