Innovations made famous by The Stones
Posted by: colonial ()
Date: October 19, 2010 13:43

Have The Stones ever thought up new ideas and made alterations to a certain musicial instrument so it would suit and improve their own style of playing it..and it made such a noticeable difference that other musicians or even the manufacturers of the instrument copied it.
Or it could be their innovative ways they've gone about Recording or Stage designs that others have picked up on and are now doing the same

wireless microphones
corporate tour sponsorship
one of the first music videos- JJ FLash

reading the excepts from Life, I'd say how to party like a rock star would also qualify. I thought I was reading Hunter Thompson for a while there.

When the Stones were on the road in the 70's they were innovators in using the tops of amps as places to lay out lines of Coke and Heroin.

The small piece of pipe you snort blow with, you don't keep it in your pocket (how vulgar!) no, you wear with a chain around your neck.. like Keith in '72!

I think that with their '69 tour, they were the first band to use monitors in arena shows?

The B stage ?

Not even close. U2 and Bryan Adams (to name but two) beat them to that by a few years.

The Beatles were regularly playing and filling stadiums in 1965 and 1966.
With a couple of exceptions, the Stones didnt start playing stadiums on even a semi regular basis until 1975. I think Led Zeppelin and Elton were playing them a year or two earlier. CSN & Y as well on occasions.

They were the first act to have a concert broadcast on the internet - in 1994.

Also, the first band to use corporate sponsorship - in 1981 (Jovan, I think)

The only act to have number one albums in five different decades. They topped the charts in the UK in every decade since the 60s - and had ABB sold 11 more copies in it's first week in 2002, theyd have had chart toppers in SIX decades.

I was just reading recently in some guitar magazine about Keith's use of the "Gibson Fuzz Box" (some guitar expert can clarify the exact name and model) on "Satisfaction". According to the article, Gibson had sold very few of this device up until "Satisfaction" was released. After the record came out, and people found out what Keith had used to get the "dirty" sound on his guitar, they sold "thousands" of the device. All because Keith used one on "Satisfaction".

Also, wasn't either the '69 or '72 US tour one of the first where the PA was "flown" as opposed to just having the speakers sitting on the stage. I seem to remember hearing that somewhere.

Peace,
Mr DJA

well,i think Pink Floyd and Stones really made stadiums what they are now.
Zeppelin didnĀ“t play many stadium dates,,i know it,because i have 300 zep show.
Almost all their shows were indoor arenas.I can only think of Kezar stadium-1973.

Thanks for the update fiftyamp... I've been reading to many old guitar mags recently and couldn't remember the make/model, just the story of how Keith using the device changed how sales were going for the company. If I can find the article at home, I may try to update with the actual text.

Peace,
Mr DJA

I Think they innovated " hanging monitors " in 69 and transporting them from town to town . Also the outlandish press con-ferences announcing tours . Also Dressing In Drag for videos . How crazy was that ? Also having their own fully realized mobile recording studio .
