That would makes sense if we're talking overall sales, but not for chart performance. Some Girls is doing considerably better in Canada than the UK also. When the album originally came out it was #1 in the US and Canada, but #2 in the UK. I don't know if it just doesn't appeal to UK audiences or what, but this is an album that doesn't do AS well there as in North America for some reason. Not to say it does bad, or that we need to find out where the "UK fans are".

I think you found out when the Exile reissue came out.

Hardly a big deal. Just before Christmas is not exactly the best time to be competitive for UK releases.

Chart performance is all dependent on what else comes out that week. Stones releases rarely have much staying power.

Anyone think, like I do, that if the second disc was available as its own album vs having to buy Some Girls again it would've sold better?

Some Girls was quite expensive for an album that most Stones fans already have and some outtakes.

I can see the UK fans being reluctant to pay for this. CDs, for some unknown reason, are unreasonably expensive in Europe. And this release was really half of something you already had, with some dodgy bonus cuts. I imagine they're more discriminating and maybe downloaded those bonus cuts they wanted. I've noticed in the past that complilation type albums do really well in the UK, offering more bang for your buck.

I think you hit the nail on the head. There has been quite a lot of 'new releases' for Stones fans to buy recently and as they say times are hard. Also it could be a demographic thing in that many Stones fans simply aren't with us any more in the uk, if you think about it logically since they began their careers here it would mean people got into them before people in the US and would therefore be slightly older and therefore more likely to be dead of disinterested in buying re-mastered, re-packaged stuff. Who knows.

Not sure about that...I purchased it from amazon.co.uk BECAUSE it was about 25% cheaper than buying it from amazon.ca or amazon.com, even with the shipping factored in.

I do notice though that 'compilation albums' seem to do disproportionately well in the UK, so they seem to be quite 'value conscious'.

I guess I'm not factoring in the Amazon factor, which I'm sure has revolutionized things in Europe, as it has in America. I still think of Amazon as relatively new, although it is now the norm, and politicians are under increasing pressure from brick and mortar stores in the U.S. to level the playing field by having Amazon collect sales tax.

Not really sure that anyone in the UK is really bothered or motivated by sales figures and chart placings anymore.

One of which they already had.

Are there only two countries in the world?

How's it doing in France?

dont think we have an equivalent of that.

So, its not treated as a 'new release' for chart positions ?

Hard to know for sure...one could argue that it got the publicity it did BECAUSE of it being associated with Some Girls.

With that said, they certainly didn't promote it very much. Maybe they would have promoted it much more if it was deemed a 'new album'. I guess we'll never know.

U2 did sell better worldwide, the Stones did a bit better in the U.S., both albums are on the same range worldwide, about 120-150k sold, a far cry from the million plus that Exile moved on 2010.

Thanks - then Stones are neither better nor worse than expected according to market standards for the kind of release
