Well the best Stones song as we all know is Gimme Shelter, so which ever wrote that one would be the best.

Hard to debateb because so much of those songs had Mick's phrasing, lyrics (the bulk of..), melody etc....
When Keith says, 'I wrote such and such...'
I imagine that means he came up with the basic chord structure, a bridge line etc.....

It depends if you need a string for your stand-up bass or for your Ukulele

Saying that Mick is a more complete songwriter is not diminishing Keith's own genius. But the thread is not 'Who is the better riff-master or musician?'
Its who is the better "songwriter". Keef fans need to get a grip. Keith is the groove, the guts of a song. Jagger is the one who gives it shape. Why is it so hard for some of you guys to accept some fans giving Jagger the edge on a certain aspect of the Gimmer Twins?

Exactly. But some Stones fans seem to deny that Jagger could have strengths greater than Keith, and that's stupid.

That's the kind of shit I'm talking about. We can't have a conversation about Mick and Keith's merits without Keef fanboys getting all pissy when someone suggests Jagger is better at something.
Amazing. And you guys wonder why some of us get defensive about Mick.

Well stupidguy2 lets consult history if you will. Keith wrote all the music and Mick And Keith wrote the melodies up to Between the buttons - according to Jagger himself - correct me if I am wrong. Then Mick evolve into a sonwriter himself, capable of writing whole songs, and a great one. He wrote great lyrics to Keith's music for a while. I always tried to find information on the songs Keith wrote music and lyrics as well... You can find the Lennon only and Mac only tunes ...

The problem with history however, is that Jagger is the last one to take credit even if he did write a song, so its hard to really measure anything.
Keith always talks about how "Satisfaction" came to him out of the air, in a dream - he woke up and put it on tape. That da - da-da-da - is pure keith. But the rest, pure Jagger. Its hard to measure. I give the edge to Jagger as a songwriter based on what we have to determine how their partnership works.
Jagger dimishes his own input, always has and even Keith will say that. I'm just going by what we know of their writing routine, system...and solo material, of course. Also, outtakes, particularly the SG demos, are a great indication - its Jagger calling out the chords, bridges etc....
I don't understand how anyone can listen to the bulk of these demos and still deny Jagger "songwriting" creed. I don't have to prove it, its all there.
According to Jagger, Keith "wrote" everything and I don't believe that.

The Stones don't have songwritters. Have the Stones ever had a writ with a melody to it?

Re: Who is the better or complete songwritter in the Stones?

Jagger-Richards is easily their best songwriter.

Tex Ritter was the best songwritter outside the Stones.

we don't know who wrote which bits of what Stones numbers, outside of a very small handful of songs.
folks enjoy speculating, but don't forget it's just your imagination, okay?

"I don't think people really know or care that much about what really goes on.
I don't think people care about the mechanics of songwriting, particularly.
So they think, Oh, well, Mick must write all the lyrics, and Keith writes all the tunes,
which might have been true 30 years ago, but it really isn't true now. But that doesn't worry me very much.
Keith might be underappreciated as a lyric writer. I don't think it worries him."
- Mick Jagger, 1995, quoted on [www.timeisonourside.com] (well worth reading!)

For Stones it's Keith Richards as he wrote the tunes
and the best solo-writer is Ronnie Wood...I think Keith would confirm that too...

It is usually Mick who writes the tunes as he is the singer, he writes nearly all the lyrics and why would he need Keith to write music, as he plays the guitar, the piano, bass, drums, harp...
And he did that not only for the last 10 years, but for the last 40 years.
DonĀ“t misunderstand me, Keith is a very important songwriter for the band, but not their main-songwriter.
Mick gets the most credits when Keith is not on a song, and when he is, which is of course most of the times, he is automatically called the writer of the song. But Keith on a song or not does not have anything to do with Keith writing or co-writing a song.
Mick is the more complete and better songwriter for me.

Mick wrote Brown Sugar and the lyrics to Street Fighting Man. That's all you need to know. He's the best.

Regarding solo work, Ronnie has written some of the better songs.

In the Stones it's hard to tell. What's really the best - Gimmie Shelter or Brown Sugar?

I'd say they're equally good. Keith lacks a bit structure, whereas Mick lacks a bit instinctiveness, imo.
