Help Please. How to Play Prodigal Son
Posted by: Cafaro ()

Hello all,
Thanks to many people on this board, I have been having a blast playing songs in Open G. Monkey Man sounds great! Brown Sugar, Soul Survivor, and I'm Going Down are in my constant practice line up.I am in process of working on Good Time Women/Tumblin' Dice

FYI.....I have always liked Good Time Women more than Tumblin' Dice but I digress

I am curious about Prodigal Son. I have seen places where it's stated that it's open E or Open D.

Has anyone done it in Open G or standard? If so, I would like to learn hoow it is done. My goal is to play the version one hears from the 1978 tour rehersals ( the chopped Woodstock version or the full version) first and then start in on the fingerpicking stuff.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

I haven't heard the 1978 version but the Beggars Banquet one is on open E (or D with capo on 2nd fret) and you play the open chord and then add the 2nd fret in the b-string and the 1st fret in the g-string to form the A chord, that's practically the whole song along with the turnaround (that's no way to get along...), I think Keith played it with a pick, not with his fingers.

Open D

Use that tab, listen to the song and try to play the guitar simultaneously. I was able to play the song that way within 15 minutes. It's really fun to do, but I don't like to change the tuning for just one song.

I do it in open E (open D with capo 2nd fret is the same relative tuning). The key on this song is the timing of the strum of that little lick over the open E chord between the vocal lines. It's a bit trickier than it sounds.

Upwards strokes on the A string (paralelled by downward strokes on the 6th E string) does the trick. The other licks are played with the 1st E and B strings.

Great song, btw.

For RonnieĀ“s Faces rendition there is a slightly different approach with the lighter strings, and of course he uses a slide on this one.

OK,
So how do you replicate that "rattling" noise at the end.
[Dropping a pick into the sound hole is one idea ;^)]

ok....thanks all. Does anyone know if they use open E tuning on the Woodstock sessions? Also, what other Stones songs are in open E?

I am also having a real hard time figuring out the acoustic version of All Down the Line. I've looked at You Tube, tabs, etc...and I just cant seem to get it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

No Expectations is in open E. Half of Beggar's Banquet is in E, isn't it?
Salt of the Earth is open tuning. Parachute Woman might be? Dear Doctor's in E...

Then of course there is also the studio version of CAGWYW (capo'd up)

Parachute Woman's also in E, Sympathy For The Devil too, although both in standard tuning.

Dear Doctor is in E, but not open E. It's standard tuning.

yes, but soundwise it is not the same, it always gives a little different feel playing an open E song in open D with capo---

True, but I prefer Open E, as you can reach more notes high up the fretboard (two more frets to work with). Some people don't like to tune strings up in pitch, which is the main reason to tune to D and capo.

That guy is doing a better job than any of the live versions of Keith playing it I can find on youtube.

I play it by putting in Beggar's Banquet and going to track 7.

Hello all,
Has anyone out there played Prodigal Son is Standard tuning? I seem to be able to play everything except the Chorus of "that's the way for us to get along" part.

I'm playing the song E to A (first position) and when I get to the chorus I play a C# on the 4th fret 5th string and move from C#, D, D#, E. It just doesn't sound right.

Anyone else try this?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, Pivettricker (the youtube link above) is THE best source for learning how to play (near) faithful or completely faithful versions of songs. He is incredible, and has hundreds of demonstrations and lessons.

It just doesn't sound right.

That's because you are not playing it in open tuning smoking smiley
