anyone of you a "fan" of Bill wyman?
Posted by: Havo ()

I Think , he is so underrated. in most of the IORR-threads. Always jagger, Richards
Watts, taylor, Wood, or Jones.

Bill is a brilliant bass-player, and the STONES will know this!

I think we all are bill's fans. He is a Rolling Stone. And he is an amazing bass player.

A lot of what we know of the Stones' early days are a result of Wyman's memoirs & picture-taking.

Call him a nerd if you want, but he is more than OK in my book.

He shagged more chicks in the 60s than Mick and keef did combined.

Yeah baby

Big fan and love his "bouncy" bass playing! An integral part of the Stones and their image for so many years...

Always been a fan of Bill Wyman and his contribution to Stones music, both on record and stage. I really wish he would join up again.

I think he sort of filled that Ringo part in the beginning. He wasn't as glamorous or as good looking as the others and therefore people felt they could identify with him more. Of course this is nonsense. He's as complex, maybe more so, than the others in the group. He had piano lessons when young. He was an electrical enthusiast who built his own amps and reshaped a bass and tore its frets off for his own use. He was always adding little musical tweaks here and there ala Paint It Black and Jumping Jack Flash. When Mick Taylor left and the sound got thinner, he fattened up the sound to fill in the empty spaces. Whether he meant to or not, he took something very precious with him when he left, the chemistry of the band. It's not as noticed on stage (unless you saw Darryl fumble and f-up Anybody Seen My Baby on the BTB tour). But in the studio Bill's subtlety and melodic sense is gone forever and they have suffered for it.

Who knew that Bill was chasing all that tail while Keith was chasing the dragon? Which one would you have rather done? Then, when he decided his playing days with the group were over, Bill gave us books about the early days from the inside with fantastic memorabilia. He was one of the first in England to have an Apple computer. God knows what he still has in his collection we don't even know about yet. Maybe someday there'll be a Rolling Stones museum based on what Bill collected. Yeah, I'm a fan.

I remember Bob Dylan saying that the Stones are a funkband now without Bill. Very true, his bassplaying was a key component in the mix. And he was very easyspoken and down to earth. Really the opposite to Mick in that sence.

How about Taylor is he still with the band? Bill is awesome bass player and writes interesting solo stuff and has not left the band although stop playing with them he is and always will be a stone. Also seems to be fewer bass specialist here than selfaclaimed guitar virtuoses and therefore is more talk about the guitarists. How does Bill know how many girls Jagger or Keith has slept with? Its akward to be counting and talk about it but he has a little obscure hobbys and guess thats good.

To be honest, I don't quite get what Bob is talking about. Check out Hampton '81 and tell me who is the funkiest bass player on earth? I think what Bob really means is that they're not as good without Wyman.

I think he meant that they were a rock & Roll band with Bill. Bill plays rock & roll bass, Darryl is more of a soul/funk bass player.

Yes. I am a fan. His bass was an integral part of the Stones unique sound and I really dug the way he played with the band. He filled the space beautifully and in such a way as to not always be obtrusive and fit the song. His bass lines were inventive and not obvious in that they did not follow the main melody line, as in say, 'Satisfaction'.

Yes he is a fantastic addition to the whole Stones sound. Listen to what Don Was says about him in the extras section of the Exile DVD. And he was playing bass trying to emulate his parts during the Exile project. He is superb. Too bad his solo work sucks so bad. He needs the Stones obviously. peace.

more like we notice Bill now that he's not with the band...watching him live, very unassuming, motionless staring out into the audience. but listening now, he brought an artistic element that hired hands just don't bring. he put so much space around his playing, contributing to that open rhythm sound. not crowded like so much music is.

Here's the Dylan quote:

"I’m not saying they don’t keep going, but they need Bill. Without him they’re a funk band. They’ll be the real Rolling Stones when they get Bill back."

I've probably said in ten different posts in past five years on IORR that I consider Bill Wyman to be (along with his very good friend Charlie Watts, the veritable ENGINE of The Rolling Stones.
