If there had been a 1984 tour
Posted by: stewedandkeefed ()

Imagine the Stones had stayed on course in the 1980s and kept the U.S. tour schedule of a tour every three years and there had been a tour in 1984 to promote Undercover. Just for the fun of it, speculate what the set list would have been.

The rules are that there should be a 24 song main set with one Keith song as the 13th song and a single encore. There must be at least 5 Undercover songs.Try to be realistic.

Just one quick point: Too Much Blood would have been cool to hear.

Cool idea. Let's see...how 'bout:

Start Me Up (not used as opener for last tour so would be perfect here)
All Down The Line
Gimme Shelter (bringin it back!)
Undercover Of The Night
Tops (trying it again, and playing it better)
Miss You
Bitch
Heartbreaker
Let Me Go
When The Whip Comes Down
Down The Road Apiece (they finally got it right this tour)
Time Is On My Side
Wanna Hold You
Midnight Rambler
Sympathy For The Devil (an evil one two punch)
Too Much Blood (more evil?)
She Was Hot
Summer Romance
Worried About You
That's How Strong My Love Is
Tumblin' Dice
Honky Tonk Woman
Brown Sugar
Satisfaction
---------------
Jumpin' Jack Flash

There you have it, and I believe it complies with all the rules set forth, and is realistic.

IF there had been a 1984 tour:

T-shirts would be $15.00
Concert programs $8.00
Beer: $3.00
Soda: $1.25
Tickets: $19.00
Parking $3.00
Service Charges: 75 cents
Nachos Grande: $2.50

(All typical for a 1984 concert tour except I made the ticket prices a few dollars more)

Complaints about the setlist...well, people will bitch no matter what they play.

Some highlights:

Mick and Keith fight onstage
Ronnie nods out during solo
Charlie falls off of drum stool
The tour ends early with several canceled dates, and the band breaks up in acrimony.

Nice idea. It's always great to pinball around these what-if ideas...

I think Too Tough would've been a great show opener.

Intro: Straighten Up And Fly Right
01 Too Tough
02 Hang Fire
03 Honky Tonk Women
04 Some Girls
05 Hand Of Fate
06 No Expectation
07 Neighbours
08 Lady Jane
09 Brown Sugar
10 Undercover Of The Night
11 Winter
12 Miss You (including introduction of the band)
13 Wanna Hold You
14 Too Much Blood
15 Down In The Hole
16 Tie You Up
17 She's So Cold
18 If You Can't Rock Me
19 Tumblin' Dice
20 Start Me Up
21 Bitch
22 Satisfaction
23 Jumpin' Jack Flash
24 She Was Hot
Outro: I Got Stung

Also puttin' something different to the setlist.

OT: Stones should change the setlist every night drastically when the 50th Anniversary Tour kicks off.

Lettingitbleed - I think your set list is excellent(except you put Too Much Blood twice!). I think they would have had one or two other Tattoo You songs but excellent choices - well paced set.

Thanks alot Stewed. Yikes, you are right about Too Much Blood! I will correct that...not sure what happened there.

in hindsight, it would/could have been a fun tour simply because both guitarists still had their full complement of chops...by the time '89 rolled around, that wasn't the case....coulda have been the last real rock'n'roll tour for them....as it stands, 81/82 was it....

yep, lettingitbleed's setlist really looks like it could have happened given where the Stones were in their playing and their thinking about concerts at that time. 'Down the Road Apiece' - definitely!

Plus, that setlist would simply have been a great show.

It would have been nice to hear some more Undercover tunes live other than the three that have gotten the treatment. Also, consider Rewind, it would have possibly of been a Rolling Stones Records best of tour combined with Undercover.

Would have been a pretty interesting show, even with the 1060s tunes thrown in I'm sure.

10, 19, ha ha, a slip of the key but perhaps they would have done the same?

makes me wonder....

Some people have described the vocal & playing style of the '81 tour as more "punkish" & raw.
Mick seemed to blow his voice out every night etc.....

And..the '89 tour has been described as "vegas" etc... and it seems that they
made more of an effort to sound like the original recordings. This was
their "comeback" tour...so they were trying to prove that they had not lost it.
Mick took care of his voice...and the band was tight.

First question, if they had toured in '84....would it have been more similar to their style in '81?? Probably.

Second question, had there NOT been the tour-less period between '82 & '89
would they have taken the time to re-examine things as a band.....get (more) sober
and get serious for a "comeback" like they did for Steel Wheels??

I think..IN THE LONG RUN....had they toured in '84 & '87, they would have hung it up
earlier. In a weird way...the fights, the solo projects & tours..and the lack of a Stones tour
in the mid 80s may have prolonged their career (as the STONES) because they came back
so strong w/the Steel Wheels Tour. (of course this all assumes that they "reunite"..which they did).

So to respond to the "If there had been a 1984 tour" thread..................I'd say, it might have been their last.

This opinion is worth NOTHING...all hypothetical. winking smiley

given that mick's '88 live act became the prototype for '89 and beyond, it's fair to suggest that '84 would have been much more similar to '81 than '89...

yes...and the '85 mini performance at LIVE AID was a good transition from '82 to '88.

Likely setlist:

the year of the Jackson VICTORY tour would have had a familiar dance number to open the shows amd seem the beginning of a greatest hits-heavy "show" with emphasis on lighting and costumes to even greater effect than in 1981/2. There would have been less emphasis on sixties/ early seventies material.

I still have a couple of cassettes that my buddy Droid and his "production company", Bong West made up at the time. Very similar to some of the above. Personally inscribed and signed "here's to the 1984 Tour!" How sad that it was not to be.

If there had been a 1984 tour, I might be a better balanced person today. 1983-1987 I was a cabbie in Boston, meaning I could work whatever days I wanted and I had my earnings in cash after each shift. Which meant, of course, that I was waiting with baited breath to go on like a 10 gig tour following the Stones around. It would've been awesome. When the '89 tour rolled around and I had a different job, I got demoted for taking time off to see 6 shows. LOL. Not that I'm BITTER(!!!) about it or anything, haha.

I don't mean to spoil anyone's fantasy, but there are good reasons they didn't tour in '84.

I liked Jagger's 1988 solo tour. I've talked with Joe Satriani about it in great detail about it. Mick was a workaholic...in a good way.

Haha, how true! It showed the future of the Stone's live show in Mick's Vegasy set, and Keith and Ronnie being out of it and playing like crap.

Who back then could have known that's how they would actually end up!

Oh, man...we completely forgot the best part of the '84 tour.

Taylor ditched Dylan and toured with the Stones.

There, that should give this thread at least 17 more pages.
