Which stage was the greatest?
Posted by: NedKelly ()

I will never forget the stage in New York on the Steel Wheels tour. It's the most impressive I've seen to this day.

I've been wondering ever since if this was The Stones' biggest stage ever? Anyone knows? I know they didn't have the b-stage at that point, so I am thinking of the height and width of it.

On the other end of the scale is the dissapointing Urban Jungle stage on the European leg of the tour. I think that is the worst stage they've had.

Anyway, the best stage in Stones' career is The Steel Wheels US edition in my opinon.

Any thoughts?

no it is not, because it had a creepy video screen and in the middle of the stage it looked like a very small stage, because there was just nothing but a cheesy roof.

best stage in stones history is the vl stage, biggest stage is the abb stage, way bigger and heavier than the sw stage

because of the on stage tix area it was a very heavy stage, that was also the reason why there was no onstage seating in 2007 anymore, because it was too expensive to drive this heavy useless thing through europe again

The Lotus stage from 1975 is the best stage any group has ever used.

I enjoyed the Steel Wheel's stage. There was nothing like it at the time. Completely original. I believe they've been chasing that show and tour since 1989.

Definatley 72, can't be doing with all these extravagant stage sets...it's the music and the musicians we go to see...at the very most there should be 1 screen just so people at the back see something.

I loved the Superbowl tongue stage.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

This is exactly what's been wrong with the Stones live shows for the past 20 years - and maybe 30 years. It became about the stage and the show as much as about the music.

Thanks for illustrating the point by this question.

Now that was a cool stage! But, it was a one off.

IMO, their best was Voodoo Lounge for sure!

I never mentioned the music because it wasn't a part of what I was wondering about. Of course the music is the most important, and if I ever get a chance to one more time see them at Roseland, Olympia or Circus, I would much prefer that to any stadium show, or arena show for that matter.

I don't get why people think the VL stage was so brilliant. I think that apart from Steel Wheels, A bigger bang stage was the best. Would have been fun to know what you think was so great with it.

And the Lotus, of course, but I guess both that one and the 72 stage was more or less visable only on pictures since the whole decoration was on the floor, except when the Lotus opened up at the beginning of the show.Couldn't have meant a lot to the audience?

And I still wonder if A bigger bang stage was actually raging higher up in the sky or was wider than the Steel wheels stage in NY. Anyone has the actual measures?

The Stones at the Steel Wheel's phase of their career delivered both great music and a great stage. It does not have to be an either or situation.

72 tour stage
Stones should get back to the basics and forget these overblown Vegas-type shows

Hi NK, l was at the Garden for the 75 shows and have seen every other stage after that, and as far as impact the lotus wins hands down, when the petals started to open up with "Fanfare for the Common Man" plus the drummers from trinidad playing, the audience went crazy, and then as it was opening up you could see Jagger at the tip and Keith doing the first notes of HTW,the reaction of the public has not been duplicated in any other show that l have attended..

The '78 Stage was kind of funky, the lips logo with a tongue extending into the audience. Simple, but effective. SW was over the top. ABB wasn't bad. The '75 Lotus is sad; probably their most memorable, but so little decent footage of it survives.

I always like the 1981-1982 outdoor stage. Particularly the U.S. version.
