Charlie Watts absolutely superb at le Duc des Lombards!

To-night, Tuesday 7th, I have just seen Charlie Watts for his first boogie woogie night in Paris.
In Paris, I have seen the Stones many times at several venues; I have seen Bill Wyman at le Bataclan and l’Olympia.
I had already seen Charlie several times at Ronnie Scott’s in London, but to-night was the first time in a jazz club in Paris.

The venue, le Duc des Lombards jazz club is a nice place. It has been refurbished in February 2008. The sound is very good.
The Duc des Lombards jazz club in Paris is about the same size than Ronnie Scott’s in London. Both venues are quickly overcrowded when they feature Charlie.
He did two gigs at 8 and 10 p.m. I went to the 10 p.m.
His equipment is a Gretsch as usual. He has been playing for about one hour and a half.
Charlie was absolutely superb. I was in the first row, right in front of him. His drumming was outstanding.

Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters on piano, and Dave Green, childhood friend of Charlie, on bass, were great and really boogie woogie.
The Magic of boogie woogie CD is sold at the venue. Charlie signed a copy for me.
I told Charlie that he made a great show. I also told him that I saw him with the Tentet at Ronnie Scott’s and that I was going to see him again the following nights at le Duc des Lombards.
He listened to me and said “thank you”.
See you to-morrow night.

Great...damn makes the cancellation in Milan more painful.
Oh well, the next time.

So Milan has been cancelled too?? That is too bad.

Well, thinking about it...Poland was cancelled, now Milan, both was supposed to be in November. I got a message from the oganizers of the Polish concert (before they cancelled), that they were waiting for the approval from the Rolling Stones management. So it looks like November is booked for some Stones'activities. Maybe recording? It sounds logical.

Anyway, thaks for the great review Georges! Any photos? I really regret I won't see Charlie this time. It is great he does so many shows in Paris, on the other hand they play pretty much half the time they did the last winter in order to do 2 shows per night. But it is a great treat anyway. We are anxiously waiting for any other details, photos and reviews from the other gigs!

It looks like the place is so small they don't even fit on the stage - Dave Gereen is almost backstage. Great picture!

Yes, the stage is small and both pianos need much room.

Looks like they are broadcasting both concerts: Paris time is GMT + 2 hours:

To listen live:

Click on "Ecouter TSF" (bottom left) - choose your player and away you go! Sorry I don't know how to record internet radio - I don't know if there is any kind of "listen again" facility but there might be podcasts afterwards?

And curses upon TSF, whose commentator keeps talking over the music and which has twice missed out bits of the LIVE concert to make room for 3 minutes of BLOODY COMMERCIALS.

Fantastic show - even with the commercials! It'll be great to be able to hear it again.

The Wednesday gigs started later in the evening than the previous ones.
The 10 pm show began at 10:35.
There was a large range of people in the audience. There were English, German, Dutch, Russian and other nationalities. There were some French politicians too.

I sat in the first row again, at three meters away from Charlie.
Next to me, there was a famous French musical writer and reporter. He was wearing a big ring almost alike Keith’s ring.
Well, the audience was hot and Charlie too.
Charlie wore black and yellow striped socks. His ankles looked like tiger’s!

The set list was somewhat different than the previous night. Roll ‘em Pete was not on the list this night, but there were great titles like Sympathy For The Drummer.
The whole band was brilliant and Charlie was terrific.

Everybody enjoyed the show.
I shall come back to-night, Thrusday.

See you to-night.

I was sitting next to the guy and he seemed to talk over the songs, a bit odd.
And yes, Charlie looks so good. Great show and a very good setlist.

It was great. We were sitting next to Ben Waters in front of the stairs and it sounded superb without PA.

So cool to listen to a worldclass Boogie Woogie concert and meanwhile eat and drink something. I enjoyed a Croq'des Lombards (€14). This is The Lombards Toasted Sandwich Pan-fried duck foie gras, green salad and candied ginger. This Croq' des Lombards was nominated for the "Palmes de la Restauration 2009". With that I drunk a Muscat de Rivesaltes (€7). After that I had a Gourmet coffee served with profiteroles (€9).

Veronica even got a kiss from Charlie when he went back to the dressingroom. Charlie is her darling!! !

Ok, je serai là aussi à cette heure là. Comme mon nom est ambigu, je précise, je suis une nana (la cinquantaine, cheveux très courts). A ce soir >grinning smiley<
