OT Daltry to tour tommy
Posted by: ablett ()

ROGER DALTREY, the iconic lead singer of The Who, will perform The Who’s legendary rock opera TOMMY from start to finish. (The Who never actually played the complete TOMMY.) Daltrey premiered the show at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust on March 25th and is now taking it on the road.

Employing striking visuals to accompany the music, every show will be an unforgettable experience for lifelong fans and newcomers alike, who will be treated not only to the full majesty of TOMMY, but also to a variety of Who Classics and more.

TOMMY is one of the most acclaimed and defining works of the rock era. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998, the 20 million-selling double album spawned a successful 1975 film of the same name, with DALTREY playing the title role, which re-underlined its place in the cultural firmament.

DALTREY is pulling out all the stops with a full backing band that will bring the rock opera’s wide-ranging sounds and textures vibrantly to life. Joining him will be Frank Simes (guitar), Scott Deavours (drums), Jon Button(Bass), Loren Gold (Keyboards) and also on guitar will be Simon Townshend, younger brother of The Who’s guitarist PETE TOWNSHEND.

Commenting on the tour, Pete Townshend says "Great to see Roger performing TOMMY with his band in 2011. I will be there in spirit and Roger has my complete and most loving support. Roger is touring his unique concert version of TOMMY using his faithful presentation of the original work as the backbone for a set of wider material. It is wonderful to hear the way Roger and his new band re-interpret the old Who songs."

Throughout this tour, songs such as “Pinball Wizard,” “The Acid Queen,” “I’m Free,” “See Me, Feel Me” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It” promise to transport attendees into the world of this classic album with shuddering intensity and poetic power.

A 1989 tour by The Who saw them reprise TOMMY live. The upcoming DALTREY tour will differ in that all of the album’s songs will be played. When DALTREY and his band performed TOMMY in March 2011 at a sell out concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, The Independent called the show “a faithful reading... The stand-outs, ‘I'm Free', ‘See Me, Feel Me’ and the anthemic climax of ‘We're Not Gonna Take It’ are rousing.” Afterwards, the Who blogosphere was alight with comments from long standing fans lucky enough to see the show. These included comments like "Roger nailed Tommy" and "Last night’s concert was the best I've ever seen - what a great band!”

Roger describes the show and visuals as "A Tommy Show for today's audience from a different perspective."

“TOMMY, an album that tells a story about a “deaf, dumb, and blind boy” who becomes the leader of a messianic movement, will always be seen as a turning point for the band,” adds DALTREY. “Within it, I found the new voice of The Who and the band found its stride in making that music, adjusting it, using all that knowledge that we had from jazz and the blues into making it work in a rock way.”

The much-anticipated three-week tour launches on July 3rd at RAGLEY HALL, ALCESTER and concludes on July 24th at POWDERHAM CASTLE, EXETER.

As much as I love The Who, Roger, Pete et.al. I can't help but accept that they'll never be able to move forward. Like The Stones, Roger and Pete will NEVER be able to create any new music that comes close to the stuff they made in that golden period between Tommy and Quadrophenia. A shame really. But who can blame them for flogging that horse as long as they can get away with it? Bills must be paid.

He'll be there in spirit. Not good enough. He needs to be there in person. This is basically "The Who Featuring Original Lead Singer Roger Daltrey". I always knew it would come to this one day.

I think when guys like Daltrey or Waters tour with a well Known album like Tommy or the Wall (respectively) go see them if you want. At this point in their lives its likely that this tour may be the last one. Its clear that Pete Townshend doesn't want to tour with the Who and Pink Floyd will never reunite for a tour (nor Zeppelin for that matter, but I don't much care about them), so this may be the last chance to see rock n roll icons.

I wouldn't go out of my way to see Keith whatever he did. I'm a Stones / Jagger fan, not a Keith / Winos fan.

When Roger and John Entwistle toured in 1995 together with a local symphony backing the core band ended up being one of the better shows I've even seen.

To see Roger do a basically a solo tour doing Tomm that's been beat to death does not excite me.

Tommy sold 20 million copies? Really??
They've outsold every other individual Stones album, including Hot Rocks?
I've never heard that before.

I ADORE this band, and this clip exemplifies why. When the Who are cooking and laying it on, they are awesome beyond description, I could never get tired of seeing them live. May they reign over us for ever.

Thanks for posting.

waters does the wall
daltrey does tommy
van morrison does astral weeks

do you really find it exciting?
WHO'S NEXT?
neil young will do harvest
springsteen will do the river
kinks will re-unite to do arthur

and then we are all waiting for the next cover album of robert plant, gregg allman, csn and hundreds of others cover album.
I cannot see many positive things in these operations, beside my respect or love for many of these artists.
they don't have nothing new to tell? ok, perfect, there are hundreds of young/younger wonderful r'n'r' band out there with a lot of energy
(black keys, north mississippi allstars, gov't mule, cracker, band of heathens, derek trucks, ryan adams, phish, ALO, dave matthews - i could ahead on for hours)
i don't have a lot of time anymore for these old monuments
