I like some of their early stuff. Kinda like where the Beatles might have gone if they had stayed together. Jeff's voice almost sounds like John AND Paul, singing TOGETHER. LOL

Love the bass on "Turn To Stone". They had tons of hits back in my high school days (late 70's).

Jeff Lynne was involved as producer, songwriter and performer in a whole clutch of good albums in the late 80s, including The Travelling Wilburys, Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl, Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever, George Harrison's Cloud Nine and his own "Armchair Theatre" - the least known of the bunch but worth checking out if you can find a copy. There's some of it available on YouTube but the album itself is sadly out of print.

(Oh yes, I love ELO too)

Fond memories of dropping mescaline with my friends and driving around with "Eldorado" on the cassette deck circa 1978.

Also co-produced The Beatles Free As A Bird/Real Love.

I'm not a huge ELO fan but always immaculately produced works.

Remember how cool "Living Thing" sounded the first time you heard it?
It didn't sound like anything else at the time. I love all their early stuff.
Telephone Line reminds me of Lennon, and they had those great melodies.

lynne was a master at hooks - he could create a hook within a hook.

I was a fan of Eldorado when it first came out, but lost interest when the next album came out.

I don't understand the appeal of Jeff Lynne's production. He strips the humanity out of nearly everything he touches. His records sound too mechanical for my liking, compressed to death.

Then again, I'm having some trouble with T-Bone Burnett as the roots producer de jour. He insists on using an upright bass all the time, but he can't record the damn thing. The bottom end on his records is a rumble of undistinguishable low notes.

thats a common mistruth about lynne's production. if he is only producing the album it sound natural. when he co-writes the material is when it starts sounding mechanical.

There was a time when ELO became so uncool that the mere mention of their name would bring about disdainful remarks from anyone within earshot.

In hindsight however, it's fair to say that they were responsible for some of the most innovative pop music of the seventies.

The Travelling Wilburys were their legacy.

Roy Wood was the original genius behind the Electric Light Orchestra. Here he is performing the group's first single 10538 Overture.
