OT: Need help with pops in an mp3 made from vinyl

A friend sent me a rare song (Toots & Maytals from 1963) unavailable on CD and there is a little static in the begining of it, I used Goldwave to knock out all the noise in the begining where there is no music, but does there happen to be any software that can help with the vinyl noise and pops where the music is in the file?

convert to wave .

How would that eliminate the pops?

You need to use a tool like cool edit - you can zoom in and highlight the area of the pop and then either have cool edit reduce that sound ... or sometimes if the pops are only several milliseconds in length then you can remove it completely without any noticeable sound difference.

Agreed but sometimes you can't...eye rolling smiley
I used Sonysoundforge to remove the little pops and it works very fine.

convert to wave and then,,remove the pops..

it's better for you if there is wave from the beginning ..(not converted to mp 3)

mp 3 destroys a lot of the sound...

Once it's mp3, there's no point in converting back to wave - it doesn't ADD quality, you can never get that back. True you would be better off leaving it as wave in the first place and never compressing, but once done then it's too late.

Since you only have it as mp3 - Leave it as it is and get used to the "vintage" sound. I hope you still have the untampered version.

everytime you open it in an audio editor and save it back as mp3 you lose more and more audio information. just like copying cassette to cassette.

it's a whole different issue if you have a wave or flac file of the song.

The irony is that the pops and crackles are far more intrusive on an MP3 tranfer than they ever were on the record. This is partly because the reduced dynamic range effectively elevates a low level signal in the mix, making them realtively louder.

[Contrary to most folks belief, vinyl noise and scratches are actually less obvious and intrusive on better record decks than on poor ones. They don't excite unwanted resonances so much and are submerged within the greater dynamic range of a well designed and engineered turntable
