OT Looking back at my life so far
Posted by: sjs12 ()
Date: June 11, 2010 02:46

I'm currently splitting up with my wife of 10 years. We're the best of friends and love each other like brother and sister, we have two lovely kids but we're no longer "in love". So, at this life changing time for me, it got me thinking about my life so far. I'd like to hear other peoples stories too.

The things I most fondly remember:
When I first met my wife and the first years so madly in love, and getting married
The children and the fun we've had
The lovely summer days and nights at university, sitting on my mate's roof watching the sun coming up
Sleeping out in the forest near cheddar on a hot summer night with a bottle of scrumpy cider and a fire, playing guitar (and other similar nights)
Stones gigs at Wembley in 95 and 99 (and others)
Playing guitar with a friend during the summer of 97 in the garden between uni and finding a job
Lovely weekend away in Dorset staying in a B&B (and other holidays)

My greatest achievements:
My children
What I've done with my career
Being in a brilliant band, The Family - and recording some great tunes
Learning to play pedal steel guitar, well

Things I regret:
That we couldn't make it work out in the end
A few too many hangovers
Not keeping as fit as I should
Not making the most of my time at Uni (academically speaking, though I had a great time)
Being rubbish with money so always seeming to struggle
Never getting the hang of 5 string banjo or spending enough time learning it
Not keeping in touch with old friends

Where to now:
To make sure that I make my children's life as great as possible
Try to move on and find happiness (whatever that may entail)
To do what I can with music to make something of my talent
Go to more gigs

Overall, I guess I can't complain. My life so far is, on balance, good and I am proud of where I've got and what I've done. I could have achieved more but I've had fun. I'm not too old to rebound and reshape my life (34).

Sorry for the slightly morbid post but we're keeping things under wraps at the moment and it's good to write something down about the things I've been thinking about.

Cheers

Simon.

Thirty-four? You're life hasn't STARTED yet. I'm 51 and I haven't even decided what I wanna be when I grow up.

Sounds like a big set of changes and transitions. This has been a big year for most of my friends and people I know in terms of seismic shifts.

best wishes...

Beatiful post, Simon, despite the rather sad subject. Talk to friends, and try to have fun in this transition time. Love your band, btw thumbs up

Christ Simon

That's heavy stuff. Have you and your wife been to marriage guidance? Seriously go, I mean it. You are probably both in love with each other but just don't know it. Relationships are hard work so get stuck in. Sounds like the passion has fizzled between you two.

But hey at least you have music and you can play which is probably the best thing in the world.

Take care and get your band up to Milton Keynes.

Cheers

Don't Look Back
(But, is it really impossible to rebuild your marriage ? Would be great for the children)

I usually don't like giving advice, but since you brought it up...

Harden the @#$%& up and do everything you can to save your marriage.
It is not too late.

Good luck.

'loving each other like sister and brother'. Think about it! Maybe shouldn't be like that. And YES stay close to the children, both of you.

I'm probably too young to give any relationship advice, but after 10 years it's probably quite normal that you don't feel "the fire" like in the first 2 years... Marriage is more than that,I'd say.

Sounds like the mystery has gone. When we get like that we go out on a hot date and flirt with each other. Have you tried that?

Good point, tatters. Like the old joke goes: Why do adults ask kids what they want to be when they grow up? Answer: Because they are looking for ideas.

Good luck to you, sjs12.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

Simon, I like your first name and I like the way you wrote.
As once Mr Jagger sang :

Sounds like you have a good attitude about what's been going on. I hope you find what you are looking for. Regarding your band, do you have a a web presence?

I split up with my wife last year. I'm 36 - we were married for 14 years, together for a year before. It's hard, you grow, you move on. Been there. It gets better, trust me winking smiley
