people who diss the Stones in conversation

yeah everbody has their opinion and rightly so..but if it happens that someone, in a casual conversation, says something disparaging about the Stones, or something factually wrong about them ('Mick is gay'...'Keith actually is still on junk'..) I take up for them. Especially if its with people who ought to know better. Someone I was talking with the other day said Aerosmith was just a better band, than the Stones. he conceded it was arguable. I thought it was a strange thing to say.

Many a time have I felt compelled to stick up for our boys!

in what contexts do you have these conversations? Do you mean online? It hardly ever comes up for me.

usually its at a party, or at a bar. if somebody comments negatively on the Stones, I feel compelled to comment positively. If they say something I know to be wrong about them I call them on it. A little like discussing politics, maybe..

'Keith actually is still on junk'

I'd love to see your proof that is a false statement...or true one for that matter...

certainly you don't think he still uses heroin do you? He said he stopped years ago...
but I don't have medical proof. or any other kind. so I don't know. just going by what Keith himself has said. is that wrong?

I actually come across this quite often. Usually it ends up with how Zeppelin or The Who is better than the Stones and all that stuff. But yeah, I've always had to stick up for the Stones. I get the feeling they're not held in too high regard.

I think the fact that they're still touring in their 60's cheapened their cred. I don't agree with it--but when an artist or group starts becoming a punch line---it changes a lot of things. Of course, we all know better. The general consensus is that people look at the Stones more as a punchline and completely forget about the music.

For example, I actually have very little respect for KISS. Why? I dunno. Perhaps because I felt it was more spectacle than the music (the makeup and etc). I always wondered if people on the outside feel the same way about the Stones??

if someone said to me that they thought the stones suck, i would just brush it aside. no big deal. everyone is entitled to their opinion. i wouldn't go off on a rant and give them a powerpoint presentation detailing why they are wrong. it doesn't offend me. it doesn't upset me. as johnny cash once sang, "drive on, don't mean nothin'".

it interesting to me that somebody would say that. I don't care about changing their opinion, on the contrary I like to find out why they think that.

people often say to me, "the Stones are really old and wrinkly!"

I invariably reply, "yes".

It really doesn't matter to me if someone disses them not. The only thing matters to me is that I like them...

I've heard similar things before. Then some of those people actually went to a show. They didn't talk that way anymore.

Don't know if that could happen now but it has happened before.

The thing I normaly do is just rattle off some of the classic songs to them as in "you really don't like Gimmie Shelter, Sympathy for the devil, Paint it Black?" and 9 out of 10 times they will concede that they are at least a good band .

Happened in Ottawa in 2005. Shut a lot of people up.

i tune that stuff out because when i was in high school *early 1980's* i had to hear from the preps that the stones were old and outdated compared to the talking heads, the cars, and others. funny how the stones are still around and those bands are history. and during a bigger bang tour those preps were dishing out money to get the best seats at a stones concert

At this point, who cares and what does it matter what people say about them.

It's like when my firend rattles on about Bon Jovi being better than the Stones I point out to him that The Stones wrote way better songs and are proper rock n rollers as opposed the poncy hair metallers.

It's ironic to suggest that Aerosmith are better than the Stones...

It's a bit like saying the Stones are better than Chuck Berry.
