My end result advice would be, why do you want a tube amp? Do you know?

Why would a person want a tube amp? Because they sound better, hands down.

Yes kind sir, I'm aware that you asked HIM why he would want a tube amp, but I am not him, so my answer was for any person in general. I'm sure any guitarist on this board would agree that tube amps sound better. Wanna take a poll? That's why Happy24 wants a tube amp. Whether he knows from personal expirience or has just heard from other players, he still knows that "tube amps sound better".

Try them all out. But as sure as eggs are eggs you'll never be quite satisfied with your tone and every so often you'll have an attack of G.A.S.....Gear Aquisition Syndrome. It's a nasty insidious illness that will damage your wallet in a major way. I get it about once or twice a year.

Has anyone played a Telecaster JA 90?? It looks amazing with those P-90s PUs and the F hole...................... I'm in love with it (and with the squier Telecustom II)

I've played it a few times. It absolutely screams. It really looks great.. I simply love this guitar. The miiddle settiing on the pickups is the best. It was on my to buy list but I am going to put one of the JA's P-90s (which are Duncan's) into my Squier Tele Custom and put in new electronics like the John5 Tele has. I really love P-90s so the JA is one of my favorite Fender's. I also like this guitar because yoou can get gritty sounds without having to drive your tube amp too much.

You shoould try the John5 Tele too. Awesome machine. The Squier version is cool but Fender's really smokes. I have never heard a stoock Fender that soounds like the John5.

Great subject.

I have a Texas Red Blues Junior with the Celestion speaker. It's 15 watts and a lot of clean head room. In my opinion, if you want to stay under $500.00 US, you can;t go wrong. My only complaint is that you cant overdrive it at bedroom volumes

I am saving up for a 60s-early 70s Ampeg Jet. I let one get away this past winter and I have been regretting it ever since.

I love the Egantor Rebel 20. That is on my Christmas list. I get to Guitar Center 2-3 times per month just to play it. I have found that you can get Fender and Marrsall sounds out of it becuase it has a tube switch that let's you switch between different tube types. Love it

a fender my son. a fender. a twin if ur goin' big and loud; something smaller if not. it's the industry standard for fifty years for a reason. one could say.

oh throw a fifteen cab in there with whatever big english speaker box...be it four 12s or whatever...

i used to run a fifteen inch speaker in a cab that i stacked my twin on top of; for awhile. but it was more for show and getting the amplifier up higher on the stage in the long run; i never, even in big clubs, and occasonally in super big audiotorium, really needed even half the oooph. headroom counts.

it's heavy to lift all the time tho; when you get old. like beelyboy.
if u want stack a bit and get huger bottom than you need go ahead and u still look all stacked out....big pop star style...
..... but the basic fender engine and technology seems really really super road proof and that's where it really really counts. time after time. for forever. and counting.

i think i've seen countless twins with clapton over the years; most of the bengla desh guys were playing out of twins. god knows how many shows and albums they're used on; ki

Don't waste your money on a non-tube amp. Even though modeling technology has come a long way, with a modeling amp you usually only end up with one or two amp sounds that are passable. Gibson makes a fantastic hand-made combo amp that I just bought. It's all tube, vintage style, has tremelo and reverb, and has two power settings, so you can play with great tone in clubs or where you need less volume. $800. Let me know if this interests you and I'll send you more info. (No, I'm not a dealer).

I know what you're talking about :-) I tkink it gets worse with the better equipment you get.

Some 17 years ago I got really bad electric guitar (but actually great looking, made in 1965 - still have it, but for decoration only) and a crappy amp. Then I got Squier Strat. What an improvement I thought. And I was happy with that for some years. Then I got Fender Frontman amp amd what a huge improvement again I thought. Then I got a Squiter Tele in order not to re-tune all the time between standard and open-G. (guess which gutar is in open G).

After many years of dreaming about it, I bougt this US Strat now - see the previous page - and it sounds like heaven compared to what I was used to. But because of that I am already restless and looking for a decent amp... It will have to wait some time, I have to hold myself back (or my wife has to), it gets really expensive. I hope this illness you wrote about won't get much worse, it is not good for our money :-) Well, there are more expensive hobbies, right?

Depends on how much you want to spend, and for what purpose.Ive seen bad players on good amps and they sounded awfull..Jeff Beck ,Steve Lukather or Taylor for examlpe even get a good sound out of Marshall amps.I don't like them, still these players sound is great.Don't get drowned in technical specs.
The most important thing on creating your sound is the feeling and inspiration you put into your playing. And the guitar..What do you want to hear in your imgination? Guitar sound is like water..it's feeling can change by the day. Sometimes it's refreshing or cold, some people drown, others swim. Fenders amps mostly do the job. It's an easy amp to get in control.Pop into a music store and follow your own taste.

Exactly. And with the Super Champ XD what you are getting is exactly that -a digital modelling amp with one or two sounds that are passable, but the delay due to the processor time spoils it again.

I personally think the VOX AC4TV is a much better amp. It sounds quite boxy, but it does have a very good tube overdrive sound at relatively low volume levels. And as said, the Blackstar HT-5 is really good for some more harder rock styles. Both amps are in the $300 to $400 region.

Guys, please don't fight because of MY question :-) Anyway, Max'sKansasCity, I have answered your question just after your post - on the previous page.

I saw you answer, and a very good answer it was : )
but I was not asking for me, it was for you to answer... for yourself.

I posted that just to add to your checklist. Ask youself WHY do you want a tube
amp as opposed to maybe an accoustic guitar? It is hard to hide mistakes on
an accoustic. ....or maybe spend the money on another guitar..with different pickups?
Or maybe spend that money on a Boss BR1200 home recording station ...or ...etc etc..
I meant are you sure you need a tube amp at this point? I was not looking for debate.....

Your answer is perfect, you said you are not happy with the sound from your current amp,
and if that is the case.....you should buy something else, and it seems the
folks here will tar and feather you if you dont buy a tube amp, so if you wind up
buying something else ...dont tell em ; )

Dont worry about fighting, I dont even back and forth, I am just not into it.
I post advice and move on, I am well aware I can not convince anyone of anything they dont already think.

BUT I WILL ADD....
The idea that ONLY a tube will suffice is incorrect, that is my opinion,
and the opinion of 2 trillion NONtube amp owners out there in the world.

Tube amps should be turned way up to sound correct and for home players
that sometimes is not possible. Another problem with folks who say
ONLY TUBE AMPS OR NOTHING may cause a curious/new player to delay
starting playing guitar until they can obtain a tube amp, and that is wrong.
This not to mention that new untalented players should not play that loud,
as a courtesy to the rest of us.

I am NOT saying that you are that new player, or even addressing the TUBE ONY guy.
I am only adding my input. He could have added his input without quoting my post.

Good skill to you Happy ...... I am sure will will do well.

PS
I will pass on a piece of advice...keep one guitar out in the open...
Keep one where you look at it, and it stares at you .....
I keep one of mine between the TV and my chair..so she always looks at me..and say "PLAY ME!!!"
(I am sure some blah balher will say "NO NO keep them locked away".....so whatever works for you)

PPS
If you dont have an accoustic...think obtaining buying one.

If you want to play at bedroom levels, consider getting Amplitube software and connect your laptop/PC to your stereo. You get something like a 150 different combination of amps & cabs + tons of effects. It really sounds quite good. If the specs of your computer are OK, you'll get a real time response. Also has a speed trainer, midi compatability. Some people play live with it.

Frankly, the only non-tube amp I ever could appreciate was the Lab Series L5. It had that typical "Alien" sound. I sold it in the late 7-tees,cause I prefered a tube sound, and it didn't back me up enough.
Top guitarplayer Allan Holdsworth used to play on 2 L5's on stage. But he is an Alien player, isn't he..?

I am only adding my input. He could have added his input without quoting my post.

quote]

You posed the question, on this discussion board, to Happy24 about why he would want to tube amp. I quoted your post because I was addressing your statement/question. This is a discussion board after all. I didn't mean any disrespect, but I thought you were a dick in your reply......with the "try to keep up" shit... You're probably a nice guy, and I don't have a problem with you. Just thought you were a smart ass in your reply to me, hence the attitude. But I wouldn't hold that against you and I hope you don't hold it against me.

As to your preference for solid state amplification, to each their own. I am one of those TUBE OR NOTHING people that you speak of, but only for my own use. Tube amps do sound better, as most people will agree, and I will play nothing but tube amps on stage, but.......in some situations, a tube amp may not be the best choice. It's hard to say this without offending anybody, but it really depends on your talent level and where you're going to be playing. A beginner shouldn't be worried about getting exellent tone...learn to play first...a solid state amp or a hybrid type like the Fender Super Champ or Vibro Champ would be excellent. You can play at low volumes and get various tones out of these amps and they're in the $200-$300 range. Some one like Mathijs probably wouldn't like these amps but for a "bedroom" guitarist, I think they're perfect. There are other all tube amps by Vox and Fender among others that are in the 4 or 5 watt range, but even 5 all tube watts is still pretty loud when you crank it all the way. I'm not saying that Happy24 is a beginner or a novice or whatever....and certainly meant no disrespect, but while I certainly would suggest nothing besides an all tube amp for stage work, playing at home or in the bedroom is something else entirely.

Let´s not forget my favorite: The Biacrown custom 50 HiWatt (Last one made in 1983). Of all the amps I played thru the years. this is the one I´ve settled with. Just a tad of bright volume, master volume on 6, and you´ve got the most crunchy tube sound you´ll get.

The overdrive will be awesome on lower master volume levels, too.

Are solid state amps really bad? Most of Between the Buttons, Beggars and Let it Bleed is recorded with SS amps....
