U2 have been forced to postpone the next leg of their world tour after singer Bono injured his back.

The singer underwent emergency surgery in Germany after suffering an injury while preparing for the upcoming shows in the US.

Bono, who celebrated his 50th birthday in New York earlier this month, was treated at a specialist neuro surgery unit in a Munich hospital.

"Bono will spend the next few days there, before returning home to recuperate," the band said on their website.

Promoters Live Nation said the singer's sudden injury forced the band to pull the plug on the latest U2360 degree tour launch on June 3, Salt Lake City. The event will be rearranged.

"Once his condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates," the band added.

U2's manager Paul McGuinness also posted a message to inconvenienced fans on the U2 website insisting the tour dates will be rescheduled.

"The bank were really looking forward to getting back out on the road until the emergency on Bono's back which took place in Munich today," he said.

"We were due to start rehearsals on Tuesday in Salt Lake City and get the show ready for the next leg. There were going to be some changes, and some new material.

"It's unfortunate that we're inconveniencing fans. We will make plans to reinstate the dates as soon as possible."

... emergency surgery in Germany after suffering an injury ...

In my opinion that's never funny, no matter what you think of Bono and U2.
I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

First Johnny Halliday undergoes surgery then it's Bono's turn... it's rock'n roll itself that's being attacked these days >grinning smiley< What are we gonna do if these two are unable to perform? smoking smiley

A back injury can be the worst thing really as far as still having a functioning mind, if that makes sense. It can totally change your life AND make it hell. I would not want that to happen to me for sure. It's too bad. Hopefully he'll recover and be OK in the future.

What if people said they'd hope that Keith or Mick had the same issue and treated it so callously? Stones fans would be PISSED at such a suggestion.

I've had a pair of U2 tickets in a desk drawer since last autumn. And now I find out that I STILL can't use 'em. They've had my money for EIGHT months and I still have no idea when they will deliver the "merchandise".

A bad back is sometimes treated with orthopedic shoes.

I guess that's one more thing Bono will nab from Mick, those 6 inch joggers.

By accident the surgery also took his voice away.... U2 will not return back.

I was relying on U2 to make my Glastonbury - apart from them there is little in the way of quality rock music...hoping he pulls through both for him and me and if not hoping they book someone of equal stature for the Glasto slot

I personally can't stand the man but emergency spinal surgery doesn't sound like a joke to me. I hope he recovers well and gets back to performing for his fans.

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

The US Leg has been postponed and will be rescheduled for 2011.

From U2.com (quoted from u2tour.de)

"Bono Discharged from Hospital

Bono has now been discharged from Ludwig Maximilians-University (LMU) Hospital in Munich where he underwent emergency surgery on Friday, following a back injury. In order to fully recover, he is under doctor's orders to start a rehabilitation program and to recuperate for at least eight weeks.

Dr Muller Wohlfahrt confirmed, 'Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve. On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery with Professor Tonn at Munich's LMU University Hospital on Friday.'

Professor Tonn, who carried out the operation, added, 'Bono was referred to me by Dr Muller Wohlfahrt late last week with a sudden onset disease. He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis in the lower leg. The ligament surrounding the disc had an 8mm tear and during surgery we discovered fragments of the disc had traveled into the spinal canal. This surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis. Bono is now much better, with complete recovery of his motor deficit. The prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result, he must now enter a period of rehabilitation'.

Dr Muller Wohlfahrt continued, 'We are treating Bono as we would treat any of our athletes and while the surgery has gone very well, the coming weeks are crucial for a return to full health. In the next days, he will start a light rehabilitation program, with increasing intensity over the next 8 weeks. In our experience, this is the minimum time.'

North American Leg Postponed

Speaking at the LMU University Hospital in Munich, Paul McGuinness has confirmed the postponement of 16 shows on the U2360° Tour from Salt Lake City on June 3rd, through to New Jersey's Meadowlands Stadium on July 19th. Tour Promoters Live Nation are now rescheduling those dates.

Paul McGuinness said, 'Our biggest and I believe best tour has been interrupted and we're all devastated. For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow. He feels robbed of the chance to do what he does best and feels like he has badly let down the band and their audience. Which is of course nonsense. His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono make a full recovery. We're working as fast as we can with Live Nation to reschedule these dates.'"

although ive been a Stones fan since 1973, seen them 26 times live. I Really love U2 and Bono as a person.
It makes me sick, to read some of the terrible remarks on his person.
Ive sen U2 maybe 10 times since 1980, and they are a good band.
Think of Bono what you may. His heart is in the right place.
PLEASE respect other people. !!!
bye Jeroen

Sadly, also their Glastonbury gig is off.

Being a fan now for 25 years, I happy that they were up to the challenge of playing to a festival audience again.

It was the big festivals that broke them in the 1980s, as they managed to impress an audience of non- or not-yet-u2-fans.
I'd have loved to see them playing a festival again after so many years.
I have a feeling they were up to it and it might have brought some "fresh air" to the band.

They're not sitting on my money for a year. It's hard to find but there is an address you can send them back for credit.

Great performing band, some very good music...bought and did not like the last album (actually, didn't like the last two albums).

This is too bad.

I read the article, partial paralysis, disc problems and a tear. Dr. says 8 weeks rehabilitation to avoid further paralysis.

Ay-yay-yay.

Very bad and sounds like he is actually very lucky he should make a full recovery.
