Compiling a Stones "Ballads" top 20 - need your help
Posted by: squando ()
Date: June 20, 2010 08:03

Hi guys - plenty of time on my hands unfortunately at the moment and thought it might be a bite of fun to run this over say two weeks or so to have anyone's input on the Stones best ballads.

I ask that you list 30 songs and number them 30 (as your favourite) thru 1 as your least favourite (well on the list anyways).

Then in 2-3 weeks we can compile the songs totals and make a Stones ballad top 20 just for a bit of fun.

Ballads can be blues based (LIV) to BOB to "Mona". There is no specific criteria but just use your best judgement I guess. Only officially released material please and if you prefer a live version over the studio please make note of that.

If you would like a list of all Stones tracks Kenos will do if you like [www.keno.org]

Anyways play away if you wish if not you might wanna go help out that guy that seems to be stuck at JFK in 1978....

30 Angie
29 As tears go by
28 Moonlight mile
27 Ruby Tuesday
26 Out of tears
25 No Expectations
24 Waiting on a friend
23 No use in crying
22 Wild horses
21 Backstreet girl
20 Love in vain (Ya yas)
19 Time is on my side (Still Life)
18 Mona
17 New faces
16 Black angel
15 She smiled sweetly
14 Play with fire
13 I’ve been loving you too long
12 Lady Jane
11 Imagination
10 Thief in the night
9 Heart of stone
8 You better move on
7 Faraway eyes
6 Salt of the Earth
5 Under the boardwalk
4 All about you
3 Heaven
2 The worst
1 You can’t always get what you want

Well, what's a ballad?!
A ballad in literature is a song that tells an adventurous story (f.e. Robin Hood tales). Therefore, it can be a fast song, too (see next argument).
Radio djs seem to understand ballads as just slow songs.
I would add to that a love song, something romantic - and that rather slow.
So you've got some criteria to shorten your list. Another criteria would be only to use compositions by band members.
Then you might come up with two lists of your favourite top 20 Stones ballads...

Alright that's what I'm saying. Compile a list of 30 songs. It's hard! I had to ditch BOB and AHYS. I like them both but hey...I did overlook SSS.
Throwing out songs randomly isn't gonna help me compile a list. List 30 thru 1 - 30 being the fave and we'll go from there

And JJH - I need do nothing - as I said use your common sense for Christ sake. Always gotta be some knob that joins in on a thread just to be a padantic dick about the simplest of things.

Anyways join in if you wish otherwise happy tidings. Doing it here and about 50 of us are doing it around work and bugging the fams. We gotta Stones club going and are looking to maybe start putting together little silly things of interest such as this in each one.

I guess I'm not in the mood for statistical games like that.

It's interesting to see what others consider to be ballads. There really aren't that many of them, are there?

Thank you so much Sway for that list. I’m actually beginning a 2 year course in French next year so I’ve bookmarked that site even though I see it’s Spanish? This may sound as obtuse as it gets but if I became fluent in French would I find picking up Spanish or Italian a little easier?

JamesFDouglas you are a champion mate – it is hard but you will get there.

And thank you Skipstone for being the first to compile a complete list smoking smiley

We are even approaching a local am radio station to see if they’ll play our top 20 (or 30 seeing how far we can push it) and we’re gonna have a kick butt Stones nites with beers abound Stones tats, t shirts, caps, bottle openers, key rings and maybe a bit of gunja to kick back for our slow playing list.

We could compile them of course and playem at home but I just love that ‘am radio’ sound. Might even give them a bunch of vinyl to play with if they can be bothered.

Right on JJHMick – sorry for dropping your actual name sad smiley

Thanks for that BillWebster, thread wouldn’t be the same without knowing your disposition eye rolling smiley

And yes DandelionPowderman – I would include Imagination and Loving cup as ballads.

Rusty good form and thank you for your list. Really interesting how varied your’s, Skipstone’s and mine vary.

Agree this is a difficult exercise because most of my fave RS tunes are rather mid-tempo; but here we go:

30 Love In Vain
29 Beast of Burden
28 Tops
27 Torn And Frayed
26 Let It Loose
25 Moonlight Mile
24 Sister Morphine
23 Time Is On My Side
22 No Expectations
21 Shine A Light

(these were the ones I could listen to over and over again)

20 You Can't Always Get What You Want (strictly studio only!)
19 No Use In Crying
18 You Got The Silver
17 Winter
16 Fool to Cry
15 Just My Imagination
14 Don't Know Why
13 Time Waits For No One
12 Heaven
11 All The Way Down

(these were the ones that require a certain mood to really enjoy for me, but overall flawless tracks)

10 Feel On Baby
9 As Tears Go By
8 I Got the Blues
7 Angie
6 Sleep Tonight
5 Like A Thief In The Night
4 How Can I Stop?
3 Coming Down Again
2 Memory Motel
1 Wild Horses

(rather guilty pleasures, picked to make the 30-ballads-mark and to avoid the likes of Almost Hear You Sigh, Ruby Tuesday and so on)
