from the AP...

ANNA, Ill.—It's official: southern Illinois resident Roger Menees is the lowest of the low.
The former gospel singer from Anna, Ill., received a certificate this week from Guinness World Records saying he had sung the lowest note ever produced by a human voice.

Menees managed the feat on Feb. 11 at his Carbondale recording studio. He hit 0.393 hertz—a very low F-sharp. The previous record was 0.797 hertz.

But Menees says he could have done better and will probably make another attempt if his new record is bested anytime soon...

Well, sure as corn jiggers in August! My granny's from St. Albans!

Heck, Scaffer, we just might be country cousins!

Hmmm. Sounds dodgy to me.

Note the speakers in the clip - Roland MA-8 monitors. Manual is here for download [media.rolandus.com]

Frequency range 80 Hz - 18 kHz.

What's more, the human ear can hear sounds from 20 Hz upwards, albeit that lower frequency sounds can be heard if they have enough volume - an impossibility for small speakers (such as those on even top end hi-fis).

The human voice is normally taken to produce a range from 30 Hz and upwards, although it is possible to hit lower notes.

The physics is simple. The wavelength of a 30 Hz wave is around 11 m, whereas the wavelength of 0.393 Hz sound is 870 m.

It's possible, I guess, for a human to produce ultra low frequency sounds, but you wouldn't hear them and speakers wouldn't reproduce them.

You don't understand ... it's a MIRACLE!

Edith Grove:

My momma grew up in eastern OH, right across from Weirton. Her home town was disincorporated a few years ago and people were camping out in former bank lobbies. If that don't make us country cousins ...

... Lookin' down that .44 in you know where-ee!
