Hmmm---AS tears go by---marianne Faithful?
The last time----the who??

What do you think??

The Last Time wasnt a hit. Doubt it even scraped the Uk top 40 and most Who fans probably dont even know they covered it. As Tears Go By got to No.9 in the UK and was in the lower reaches of the top 30 in the US.

I'd guess Chris Farlow's 'Out of Time' - which topped the UK charts in 1966 and is to this day the version that's best known.

Off the top of my head, I cant think of any other covers which have been number 1 singles.

Actually....I've just thought of one.

Wild Horses by Susan Boyle.

That'll outsell the rest by some distance. The single went top 10, but the album its featured on is absolutely massive.

I guess there have been several very well selling covers of Stones songs. "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve is just another of those.

Agree with Susan Boyle's Wild Horses.

It will be interesting to see how that crappy Bossa'n Stones sold.
it was very big in South America and they are on tour at the time.

The only "great" covers (to me) are Devo - Satisfaction, Otis Redding - Satisfaction and The Soup Dragons - I'm Free. All changed the song quite a bit. I'm Free is better than the Stones version.

I'm not sure that Susan Boyle's cover is such a big seller in all-time terms - you don't need to sell half as many copies these days to make the Top Ten, certainly in the UK. I'm no expert, but my money would be on a much earlier single.

No.

#71 in the USA. Didnt chart in the UK, although the video got some airplay (dont think we had MTV here back then, though). Bette has rarely troubled the singles charts in the UK apart from a couple of top 10 ballad-style hits in the early 90s. Her albums havent done much here either although shes a popular concert draw (she's here at the minute)

According to wikpedia, 'Beast of Burden' reached #2 in Sweden, #10 in the Netherlands and #15 in Germany. The album it came from, 'No Frills' got to #1 in Sweden.
