Keith worse gig on tape... SAL Beacon

I don't think there is a worse Keith Richards gig on tape than the shows recorded for equally horrendous SAL DVD. Hopefully I am not wrong.

If The Stones ever record again and go on the road, I hope Keith finds his voice, the way Dylan did in the 80's. After all we don't stop growing till we pass away. Age and arthritis are tough, if you going to go out there you must deliver the goods other wise a reality TV show would be the best thing for Keith. "The Richards" would make them more money Jane Rose (bitch) could possibly dream.

As bad as Keef plays throughout SAL, one need only search through Youtube.com to find far worse performances from the following year.

Listen to the opening Philly shows in 1981... Incredible bad, imo.

I actually quite enjoy some of Keith's playing in Shine A Light. I particularly enjoy his Berryesque riffing on 'She Was Hot' and - although restrained in comparison to the '99 performances - I thought his guitar-work on 'Some Girls' was pretty decent. However, his soloing on 'Sympathy For The Devil' is downright atrocious and 'Live With Me' isn't much better. He's hit-and-miss these days, but that's age, and dexterity problems for you.

Keith has always been hit and miss, except for maybe in the early 60s.

IMO, the difference today is that he just sticks to a few elements in his solos, and keeps on playing them all the time... Whether it's laziness or because of his nodes, I don't know, but if you listen to the ending on So Divine (Aladdin Story), you'll hear the same run that he did so well on Tie You Up (ending). So that prooves that he still can do it if he wants to smiling smiley

On the boots, he is leading the stones to the pub winking smiley half of the songs fell apart. Some were never played again. But I can imagine it was an experience to be in Philly at that time to watch the tour opening shows. Lucky you smileys with beer

also you cannot compare his skill level on the fretboard in 1981 to sal in 2006 .

A couple of his intro riffs on Under My Thumb from the Chicago 1981 gigs are comparable with his fretwork today, but I know what you mean smiling smiley

SAL is pretty scary actually, the sound of the band is very bad, sloppy as hell, unrehearsed about 90% of the time, Jagger's vocals are at his worse ever, and it was 4 years ago!!
I can't imagine how bad can they sound in 2011.

I loved the 1981 opener in Philly..And i throught Keith was great..I'm no guitar player but i loved the Phily show..One of the best Stones concerts
i ever went too...That was almost 30 years ago--give Keith a break.. (older then many on this board) ha.

I love Keith, and I hope he's bringing the rest of the band for a new tour soon. But, to be diplomatic, there are better 1981 shows than the Philly shows out there winking smiley

Why was SAL so bad? Connection, T&A and SFTD were awful, yes. But there were lots of great tunes as well. Bad sound? All Down The Line, Some Girls and Shattered all sound good to me. So does She Was Hot.

DP---I know what your saying but i left the show thinking it was great...I never heard it on a boot later
so i really wouldn't know if Keith was great or not...I love when Keith and Woodie played rough,
like they were in a punk band...

If they tour again they need to add a third electric guitarist on stage, or under, so Keith can still be there and the sound can be improved.

Let's say Mick T on lead and Keith and a third electric guitarist on rhythm.

It is better that they present their music competently than worrying about what critics, or some fans, will think about a third electric guitarist.

BTW, I am aware about the guy on acoustic in the corner of the stage.

Think of how SFTD could sound with such a line up. Taylor, healthy, and on lead of course.

blondie is the third - he's not just on acoustic anymore.

blondie is a very talented electric guitar player....one of my alltime fave shows (largely owing to blondie) was a butterfield/danko gig in '79....

Why do so many people think he was playing so bad on Shine a light?
I think he did a good job and you have to remember that many of the songs were songs that they havenĀ“t played for a long time.

I like the raw sound of the SAL album and the guitar work on the big majority of it's songs. Especially on JJF, Shattered, She Was Hot, All Down The Line, Some Girls, PIB and others. I consider SAL as one of the four best Stones live albums. The worst Stones live album? IMO is "Love You Live", by far. And for sure "LYL" includes the weakest Mick's performances, dear Georgelicks. Just listen to Mick's "40% i'm singing- 60% i'm not singing" on HTW, JJF, Brown Sugar or to his (completely out of tune) singing on SFTD.

God... If the Stones fans were judging band's 1975- 1981 gigs being in the mood for "crucifying", as they do in the last years, then even "Hampton '81" would be considered as a mediocre concert! And in that case i can't imagine the "verdicts" about the mistakes and "boom notes" of the frivolous and unstable 1978 tour...

please lets not compare the 81 tour to the bang tour, its two completely different bands, one pure rock n roll mistakes and all and the other being a vegas act heavily relying on back up singers and players, not even on the same planet much less the same level
