Bill WYMAN : STONE ALONE IN SAINT-PAUL 1966 - 2010

Bill WYMAN: STONE ALONE IN SAINT-PAUL on 1966 - 2010

" From my first visit in April, 1971, I felt in love with Saint Paul de Vence. I am very pleased to introduce the exhibition " Stone Alone in Saint Paul " which open an open space over the years I spent in this wonderful village. " Bill Wyman

The City of Saint Paul de Vence creates the event from June 6th an Exhibition of Bill Wyman's photos in both museums of the village. And the only concert in France in 2010 under the ramparts of the village -

From June 6th till September 30th, 2010

Bill Wyman was very early interested in the photography, but his exciting life with the Rolling Stones did not let him a lot of time to practise the other forms of art that the music. For 30 years of career with the band he travelled with a camera over his shoulder, investigating the art of the photography. All All these shots constitute the henceforth the album of its life on the stage of the rock. The portraits of the other Rolling-Stones, the Who, John Lee Hooker, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Elton John and BB King as well as those artlessly intimists of the artists Chagall, Arman, César, are typically representative of this unique collection.

Bill accumulated 20 000 images until this day.

The exhibition proposes 94 pics essentially in color .Many are new and come along with some parts of personal archives. Bill's photos capture their subject outside the poses and outof control, they are the perfect counterpoint of the considerable iconography which spread in the magazines of the whole world from the beginning of its career. In 1971, after eight years of global success, the Rolling Stones were obliged to exile themselves for financial reasons. They chose the South of France, a place which fitted to Keith in Villefranche ,the place where will be recorded " Exile one Hand Street " which will become one of the record "headlight "of the Rock and roll'story .
Bill was taken away from his English habits dove completely into the Mediterranean lifestyle.

In 1979, a publisher suggested to Bill to work on a series of Marc's intimist portraits and Vava Chagall to them. These photos will be published with André Verdet's text in the book "Chagall Méditerranéen", many of them will appear then in the English edition with limited edition " Wyman shots Chagall ".

Bill decided to settle down in the area, by buying some land on the hills of Saint Paul de Vence. He imagined and conceived his own residence.

Although he returned to live in England in the 80s, he often go back to St Paul .
When Bill and Suzanne decided to get married in 1993, it seemed obvious to them to choose Saint Paul where they had initially met. Quite naturally, it is mayor at that time who united them before a ceremony in the quite close church and a reception with the Golden dove.

These last years, Bill paid attention on the wonders of nature in this small place of Provence, his last photos constitute a live portrait of the natural environment around his residence.

About 40 years passed by since Bill first came to Saint Paul in April, 1971..
Famous musicians followed , others will later to share the table under the fig tree of the terrace of the Dove. But the ex Rolling-Stone will remain one of the first " rock star " to have share links with people and landscapes of this area .
The only one also to have transformed this experience into photography.
The last three decades of the twentieth century will have allowed here a competition and rare exchanges. On one side the plastic surgeons of the school of Nice,( Marc Chagall), the musician Michel Magne, the writer James Baldwin and the poet André Verdet, the other one the Anglo-Saxon musician who wrote the soundtrack of this exuberant period.

Time again to came to revisit it!

What would you think of editing & changing the title of your thread into "Bill WYMAN : A STONE ALONE IN SAINT-PAUL 1966 - 2010" ? No offense of course .
I am glad you posted the new .

May be people here would be more verbose & stuck on the subject ,because not only there are very interesting thoughts on Bill Wyman 's life that you broached ,but Bill Wyman ,IMO, is still a Rolling Stone .
My translation might not be a close one but at least some people here will be able to emend me .

Hello,
I've got my tickets for the Rhythm kings show in Saint Paul(de vence, not Minnesota, check the difference [www.saint-pauldevence.com] expecting something special as the boss is playing at home. I saw them quite a few times. One of the best bands in the world in terms of musicianship. Can someone talk Bill into trying Georgie's very own "Bonnie & clyde" in the set list? it would remind everybody of the summer of 68 and raise tears and would sound pretty good with the Mead Payn team.
I'll let you, guys know about it.

The times they have changed, Bobby. In my day a mayor would ban rock concerts so that ,as a teenager, you would have a bone to gnaw at. The mayor of Saint Paul de Vence in person came to introduce the Rhizome Kings (!!) and praise their leader, "the most discreet of the famous inhabitants" of this French equivalent of Laurel Canyon. This time of year the whole village smells so much of jasmine that you find it hard to believe people ever fought for this place to the point of fortifying the town. The concert was held along one of the fortified walls which proved totally ineffective against invasion since the city and the valley around are occupied, owned and operated by Brits who must have had the surprise of a lifetime when they discovered the sun didn't shine the same for everybody. Bill has been hanging around there for forty years, enjoying the light and taking pictures of artists who had come to warm their bones (Marc Chagall) or get sunburnt (Nick Mason). Bill's photo exhibition was the pretext to add this French date to their European tour. God bless Nicephore Niepce. Among the gems of his production there is a very moving picture of bassist of the millenium John Entwistle, which goes to show how much Bill appreciates and respects musicians and music.
The weather conditions were ideal: warm sunset, cool breeze. The international audience ranged from ten year old kids to die hard Stones fans in their seventies or eighties. Younger children were under Tony Panico's care and he made a point of teaching them how to clap Jamaican rhythm in time on Three Cool Cats. Call it good-natured, semi informal or whatever you like, that's the kind of gig I'm ready to travel 200 miles everyday to attend.
The music was up to the Rhythm Kings' standards: both top notch and laid back.
Nick Payn and Frank Mead make up for the gaping hole left by the absence of Albert Lee. The set list goes:I got a woman/Sweet s'l music/Chicken shack boogie/too late/all night long/Melody/Just your fool/This is a man's world/Hit the road/Better for me baby/Three cool cats/Johnny B Good/I just wanna make love to you/Just for thrill/You never can tell/Encores geraint's solo/I put a spell on you/Honky Tonk woman. Geraint's solo was “Easy to say bon temps roulez”. Crowd pleasers such as Hit The Road, Johnny B Good and You Never Can Tell sent the audience to seventh heaven, singing along and dancing to the risk of breaking their thighbone. But the third encore did the trick as everybody sang their heart, lungs and guts out on Honky Tonk Woman (to Marthe Richard's great grief) leaving an exhausted but fully satisfied audience on their knees. It's not only Rock 'n Roll but also Blues, Rhythm 'n Blues, Caribbean, Cajun Music etc …you name it, they play it, we love it. When these guys went to the crossroads for the second time, they made the right choice.
Boogie Chillun!
