Questions for Bill German
Posted by: hbwriter ()

All--I'm taping a radio interview with Bill next week about his book, which I really enjoyed--I have some questions I've prepared but if anyone wants to offer some ideas and there's time, I'll see what I can include--

Ask him if he ever was disappointed - in any form
(from the musicians + from the persons).

Ask:

Have you ever done cocaine or heroin with any of the original band members?

Have you ever slept with any of their wives or girlfriends?

Did you break any laws on behalf or for The Rolling Stones?

Ya want us to do da job for ya, now???
Well: Have you ever felt like a "Kiss and tell"-bastard?

Do you honestly believe Keith will see this as your "love letter" to him?

Will you be able to look them in the eyes next time you meet, or will you just run like a coward?

How much did they - publisher - pay you to betray your old pals?

Are you aware that you've hurt people deeply?

I haven't read the book yet...but I get the sense that Keith took
Bill under his wing and treated him like a son.....

Q: Did Keith ever accidentally call you Marlon? winking smiley

I think I read that Bill German halted his education when it
appeared that his fanzine and relationship with the Stone was
going to take him somewhere

Q: Did Keith or Ronnie ever tell you to "stay in school, kid".

I read the segment in which Mick confronted Bill German and got
in his face.

Q: Did you (BG) ever mention this encounter to Keith? If so, what did Keith do?
If not, what do you think Keith would've done?

Bill was hanging with the Stones during a period when the
shit was hitting the fan.

Q: Bill, did you ever fear that something you said or wrote could escalate
the Mick/Keith feud...and therefore bring an end to your favorite rock band?
Any examples of close calls?

Can you tell him that I'm sorry my friend so rudely walked up to him and asked him for backstage passes while I was chatting him up at one of Keith's Beacon shows. He quickly excused himself, and I was completely horrified.

It still makes me cringe when I think about it.

I would be very grateful!

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

An awful lot of the questions raised here (seriously or not) are answered in the book. If you loved BEGGARS BANQUET or CONNECTION, you should pick up the book. I read it in two days. The excerpts don't honestly give a fair representation. Its a bit like a movie preview. The excerpts make you think the whole book is more of the same when it really isn't.

I would also note this is the Stones book with the least amount of factual errors. The only clunker I caught was listing Bobby Keyes' first Stones tour as '72 when it was '70. Compare that to either of Bill Wyman's books, Woody's recent autobiography, or OLD GODS ALMOST DEAD and you'll gain an appreciation for German's attention to detail.

Reading it is like reading BEGGARS BANQUET uncut. Its familiar, but with much more detail and background than was possible to print at the time. Its also funny as hell and at times, it struck me just how much German's experiences were identical to my own in growing up a Stones fan in a similar era. I also related to how his passion for the band altered as he grew older (but not his love for the music). While I certainly never met the Stones, I likewise learned the sometimes painful lesson of crossing the line in getting to know people you admire and having them become more real and less idealized as a result of being around them for a lengthy period of time. Its an essential book for Stones fans and one I'll return to again to actually read again from cover to cover and not just to double check a reference to see if my memory is faulty. That's certainly not something I can say about most Stones books or non-fiction books that I own.

Just tell him some of us here do appreciated all the hard times and all the bullshit he had to take from the Stones organization, from jane rose all the way to Michael Cohl and Mick Jagger, yet he stuck with it, and wrote a very good account of his time with the band, without resorting to sensational stories (drugs, sex, ect) to make us buy his book.

Unfortunately I haven't read the book yet!

I'd like to know how he rates the Stones instrumental playing when seeing them face to face in a room.
Did he meet Wymann at all? And what did he honestly think of him and Charlie?

And did they ever offer him some refreshments as well?

Ask Bill if he could go into a little more detail on Mick's paramours and how he covered for him?

Ask Bill if he could tell a few of the "crazy fan" stories from the chapter that got cut?

Thanks, hb...

He had to take? I don't think so.

Ask him why he changed his mind and betrayed the Stones.
