Who in your opinion is the best guitarist alive who can just step onstage and deliver a riff that drips the 3 words "rock and roll" with a purity that words don't even do justice

Post an example if possible

a little Brian May for ya

Well, ole Johnny Winter may have to sit down now BUT he can still rip into a "Johnny B Goode" or "Jumpin Jack Flash" riff that will clean the wax outta your ears!

I'd think Jimmy Page.

Depending on your defintion of "living", I'd say Keith Richards.

The Young Brothers?

Agreed. I wish I could mention Keith, but he's no longer the ultimate riff master he once used to be.

I'm not saying he's the best guitarist, but in coming up with riffs, Malcom Young seems to keep coming up with them.

And Jimmy Page (along with Keith and Pete Townshend) has certainly put his mark on history.

Angus and Malcom period.

Keith is still there - he's still got 'em. For some reason the Stones records just don't seem to have as many as they used to - too many Streets Of Shit songs nowadays.

I guess when I think 'riff', I think 'rhythm guitar', which is why I left Angus out.

But got to thinking about guys who are the sole guitarist in a band like Page (who certainly has come up with some of the most memorable riffs and is widely accepted as an excellent lead guitarist too) and Townshend (who may be one of the best rhythm guitarists out there still and certainly a capable lead guitarist) who sort of do double duty.

...lol good one, scottkeef. I actually saw Mr Winter last Thursday, and although he didn't play any of those two songs my ears were ringing just fine afterwards...especially a cover of It's All Over Now brought the house down.

An easy answer? Like some of you said: Keith Richards. But as for the new school? Jack White is hard to beat. And Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys is up there too.

Angus and Malcolm

Definitely

clarkemf ... the answer us both! But the first guitar style that comes to mind is JW's White Stripes playing. It's pure, and refined. He does also sound great with the Raconteurs though- it is there his pop side shows itself side by side with his blues and garage-rock style.

And totally agreed with all that said Angus and Malcolm Young as well.

A couple of Micks and a couple of Joneses...

Steve Jones's work on Never Mind the Bollocks alone would be enough to make him a contender.

Mick Jones's work on the Clash albums is up there, even if he did get a bit caught up in wanky effects later on.

Mick Ralphs helped write the template with Mott the Hoople.
