good for the Stones...
shows that people don't know not only what's good but what they like. you gotta tell people THIS and THAT is cool and they'll suddenly love it!

this is a fvcked up world... greatest r&r band in the world struggling to sell their records getting help by a shitty television show.

Yeah, a bit crazy, but it's cool that the kids discover real good music in one way or another. Certainly a lot better than a few thousand kids not knowing who originally wrote those songs.

Kinda funny how a 40 year old compilation being the top seller. I suppose the Idol performance of Play With Fire had a lot to do with it, since Hot Rocks and Singles Collection are about the only compilations featuring that song (?).

All very well saying they go up by 73 % or whatever, but with current sales being horrendous to start with, thats probably still a pretty small number.

I'd put that celebration party on hold if I were you. Without sales numbers being published, those stats are, as I mentioned earlier, pretty meaningless and as georgelicks indicates here, their sales are currently abysmal despite the 'jump'.

My dad said something to me about it. I recall reading about it here. I guess it aired two weeks ago? I have no idea. In another week no one will remember or care. It's simply amazing that that show is still going on. And what's even stranger is it's not made in China.

Disaster: Stones' failed to crack the US Top 200 after American Idol

Stones' sales are worse than EVER:

Last week's "American Idol" featured selections from the Rolling Stones songbook, and SoundScan is reporting heavy increases for the band's hits collection "Hot Rocks 1964-71." Overall, sales of the album were up 79%, according to SoundScan, but some perspective. Though "Idol" hopefuls gave the Glimmer Twins' songs the grandest of karaoke stages, the Stones' hit set still failed to crack the top 200. The No. 200 album this week is Three Days Grace's "One-X," which sold a little more than 3,000 copies.

[latimesblogs.latimes.com]

With an exposure of 23.5 million people in rating, this is a disaster.
No album over 3,000 copies?

I have a very bad feeling about the new Exile re-issue...

Do we have stats for how well other bands spotlighted by American Idol did in numbers?

How relevant is it now to tabulate CD sales these days as opposed to say, downloads? I mean, American Idol's prime audience isn't a group that runs out and buys CDs anymore.

This is American Idol? Since when has that ever mattered? Is it a guide for great music? The Stones tour stats for the last 20 years proves enough....

maybe the sales were so low because the kids that watched the show listened to their parents' copy. or maybe they bought used copies. or maybe....who gives a crap? if they rocketed to no.1 and were all of a sudden all over MTV and songs were used on The Hills and every little teenager was listening to the Stones because it's the latest trend, well, i would probably shoot myself.

Its not important in that sense, no - but it shows that even a move as desperate as letting their music be showcased on a hugely popular but utterly cheesy TV show has backfired totally. A loss of credibility with not even a decent sales jump to make up for it.

Imagine if it had of meant No.1 sales? They might even have made a future appearance.....

...I wouldn't discount the fact that not one contestant really distinguished themselves...a great performance would have translated into multiple i tune downloads...that just didn't happen....at least they had the good sense to stay away themsleves...

Maybe so, but if they had put any effort into coaching some of these kids and making an appearance, usually followed by a brief performance themselves, things would have been much different.

Call it cheesy but it is a top rated show year in and out. Many artists are starting to see the exposure associated with the show.

Keep in mind they don't really have a standout album for the general public to buy right now - like a new album or a fresh compilation.

They should have only let them all sing Streets Of Love. Then - and only then - would it have been perfect.
