Actually i'm not sure if there is a group, apart from the Beatles obviously, who have been covered more than the Stones.
I can't speak for mitch of course, but perhaps he meant beatles cover tunes that became hits for other people. Tons and tons and tons of Beatles songs became hits for many huge artists of every generation over the decades. As for Stones covers that became hits, I can think of a few, but not nearly as many.

Here is the one Stones song where I think the cover version might be as good as Mick'. Of course, they are both great treatments in their way

I think it's crap, but to each their own... I generally don't like it when people cover the Stones either, the exceptions (that I can think of right now) being Guns N' Roses' Sympathy for the Devil and Aretha Franklin's Jumpin' Jack Flash.

Mick could have always gone solo and been a big star.

Dancing in the Street with David Bowie, Memo from Turner were two hits without the Stones. I look at Charlie and Bill and Ronnie Wood as just being hired hands.
Keith Richard and Mick Jagger have a love affair going on.

You get five bonus points if you can tell me what the B side of Memo from Turner was. (without looking it up on google).
